I was asking about the Class:J information getting encoded into the barcode, for where airports sort priority bags electronically (like HKG). In the past it would read Class:K or whatever your fare bucket was, but it seems like now they just have Class:F, J, W, or Y. One poster upthread indicated that priority-eligible pax in Y would get tagged as Class:J, so just wanted to confirm this.

I just flew back from SIN to HKG today in PEY. I checked my baggage tag and it reads as Class: J. My actual booking class is R. So I guess this confirms that eligible pax (in this case I'm a DM) will be tagged as Class: J even when sitting in a lower cabin.

Shouldn't DM be tagged as F?

We are talking about the actual baggage tag here (with the small print that has your name, booking class, booking ref, etc.) and not the Red/Blue priority tag.:D

Right, but a DM should still be tagged as Class:F under the new system, as they get F class priority on checked bags.

In modern airports like HKG (and many others), the bag sorting is done electronically and manual intervention is minimal. The priority tag is useful mostly at some outstations where bags are primarily sorted manually.
To the original question it is pretty much acting like a real tool to recycle them like you've deserved the treatment. |
As an anecdote, I recently flew SFO-HKG-KUL in Y (fare bucket K). When I got my bags at KUL, I saw that they were tagged Class:J.
However, priority tags were not working that day (first time in ~15-20 trips to KUL on CX they didn't work). F/DM bags with a few J bags came out first, then a bunch of non-priority bags (100 or so), followed by the rest of the J bags. :( Coincidental or related to the new check-in system? |

Remember they are first put on then taken off the aircraft and if that means letting the loaders do that faster, then they come out faster. Two airports, not always HKG quality.
To the original question it is pretty much acting like a real tool to recycle them like you've deserved the treatment. Bags in transit at the arrival point are usually loaded in different containers. For PtP bags, the process is usually simple and the bags go to the containers according to priority (unless there is an overflow of bags of a given priority level). At arrival, there is little manual intervention and the container should be offloaded in appropriate order. I do not think that priority tags make any difference at arrival/offloading. What is important is that containers be offloaded in proper order, and that is usually the case given the hold configuration. Of course, if the bags are loaded randomly at some messy outstaitons, then thye will come out randomly in HKG. I fully agree that some airports do not have HKG reliable electronic systems. |

I think DM gets whatever the highest class is on the flight, but still gets the F tags.

Just an additional data point.
Was on CX879 SFO-HKG, connecting MNL, Y+ class, MPO G. Lined up Biz class, short line, waited two minutes and was checking my locks when I was approached by check-in lady, apologizing profusely for what was (for me) a very brief wait. With no prompt from me, she placed F priority tags on my luggage (2 pcs), which I thought was a nice but maybe useless gesture based on the stories on this thread. I just smiled and said thanks. No upgrades as Y+ only 80% full, but seat next to me (front row window) was blocked. Upon arrival MNL, stopped quickly to retrieve duty free items before baggage claim. Much to my surprise, both pieces were already on a cart in a special roped-off First Class section. Ahead of most everyone else. Was very pleased! Thank you SFO check-in team! |

edit: just read more. it was to syd so no F. |
I had a recent saty at The Upper House and the bell boy who delivered the bags removed the actual tags but kept the priority tags on for whatever reason. Thinking why not, I kept the tags on and when checking the next day, the agent wasnt the least bit perturbed by the tags already being on there. Then again, I wasnt trying to cheat the system like OP...
and OWS traveling in PEY: Business Class Priority tags and "J Class" on the actual luggage tag. And in the four times I picked up bags on the trip (NRT, HKG, SFO, JFK(via AA but with the CX tag and not neon OW), always in the first batch of bags out. |
That's something I really dislike is when they proactively remove your baggage tags without asking. The main reason is there is a lot of personal information on there. Your PNR and your full name is printed on it, so any enterprising person can take that info and change your booking.
I actually had an instance where I was transferring from an international to a domestic flight, but as my layover was quite long I went to a hotel for a rest only for the bellhop to remove my tags (!!). |

Your ticket number is not in there (for online changes), nor your phone number (for phoned up changes). |
