Booking E or V? Ex-Kunming to LAX advice needed

Hi everyone.

Advice needed on my trip to Los Angeles in mid-Feb. I could either book a PEY ticket (E class) (with Kunming to HKG short haul flights bumped into I) at around 10500 RMB or an Economy ticket (V class) at around 8000 RMB. Normally I would not hesitate to book the PEY option.

The complication now is that I am not too sure about the departure dates. I might need to change it to a later date. I know the two fare classes will both be free of charge if I want to change the tickets. However, I am looking at the fares at later dates, the prices are a few thousand more for each. If I buy a V ticket, as I was told, since I am MPC GO, I will still get an economy seat, regardless of the price hike on later days. This means, I can lock the price pretty much now as long as I book it. However, MPC GO does not give any PEY seat guarantee. I assume this means that I will have pay for any fare differences if there is any. This somehow concerns me a bit as it is around 3000-4000RMB more.

Which ticket should I buy now? And did I understand the whole situation correctly?

Any comments are welcome. Thanks.

You answered yourself... If u need flexibility go with V and vice versa.... Or think outside the box buy E assuming u can cancel refund.... When if ur date changes and there are no more E fares, use gurantee as Gold to buy V and refund E.

This may not actually be true. You can get a guaranteed seat in V class provided that your fare rules allow it. If the later dates are high season but your ticket is valid in low season only then you can't change your date to a later date using the V class guarantee.

You should check with your travel agent or Cathay ticketing about this. Don't trust an answer from the Marco Polo Club unless you have it in writing and are willing to throw it in their face and fight later on.
