CX to charge extra on weekends!?
According to this The Australian article, CX will be charging an extra $25 AUD per person effective immediately on flights leaving Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays for its Australian flights to/from SYD, MEL, PER and BNE (might also include CNS?). I know the extra $25 ($50 return) won't affect much as fares often change depending on fare class and demand, but it does seem abit cheeky on CX's part to even charge one.
One-way: $25 AUD Return: $50 AUD CATHAY Pacific will charge a weekend levy of $25 for travel for flights departing Friday, Saturday and Sunday from Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. The Hong Kong-based airline said promotions, such as early bird sales, would be excluded from the levies, which begin today. It also yesterday released traffic figures showing passenger numbers and cargo uplift increasing in September. Cathay and offshoot Dragonair carried 2.49 million passengers, up 4.6 per cent compared with the previous September. The two airlines carried 147,307 tonnes of cargo, an encouraging 14.5 per cent rise on the previous year. Cathay general manager revenue management Patricia Hwang said leisure traffic eased after the summer peak but demand was still generally robust on key markets. http://www.theaustralian.com.au/busi...-1227092969444 |

One-way: $25 AUD Return: $50 AUD And timing too? What is the thought behind this. Not great HK$400 or AUS$50 per return sector is still enough to annoy a hardy traveller |
They have been doing this on US flights for as far as I can remember. Usually, an extra 50 USD for R/T that includes weekend departures.

I guess it can bring more revenue, and also possibly they try to get passengers to take weekday flights. |
This is pretty interesting, although I'm not surprised consider the extra revenue I brings and the ability to perhaps balance out the loads a little bit throughout the week. I'm also curious if they write that into the base fare or simply have that as an additional surcharge

Haven't done the research, but I think even with the surcharge in some cases it would still be cheapest to fly CX from Aust to HK.

Many carriers have been doing this ex-Japan for a long time, and at much higher prices (10-50K JPY one-way). CX prefers standard price discrimination based on date. Odd that CX would choose to implement a weekend surcharge but keep it so low -- AUD25 one-way won't change traveler behavior.

so this is basically a minor fare increase for certain days, right? i know it might sound funny, but it's not that weird. as mentioned above QF has gutted demand, BA and VS dropped the route a while back....
if all the different factors that get wrapped into a route/timing pricing were printed in the newspaper, there would be much "cheekier" things than a small weekend surcharge!;). |

3 days, 1 hour ago by Rkwm Been traveling relentlessly with CX since 1988 however disturbingly just to coincide with their aniversery they have released a notice on their website advising of a surcharge on all tickets for travelers departing Australia on a Friday , Saturday and Sunday . Not a very positive 40 year celebration for Australian supporters . |
Just tried a March 2015 Wednesday-Wednesday vs Saturday-Saturday redemption SYD-HKG-SYD - same YQ no surcharge.

I guess if they want to charge extra on weekends, at least increase luggage allowances, Australians are now getting 30kg in Y as standard on pretty much all carriers (besides LCC's) and CX is still pushing the 20kg limit. CX is certainly not doing any favours for the leisure traveller when their competitors like EK, QF, MH, SQ, QR, EY, GA and VN offer 30Kg.
Ofcourse most of us don't care as extra allowances comes with status, but for the odd 1 to 3 times a year flier, it does matter and CX is lacking here. |
soorox: Dream on - CX will tell you to fly with QF "la"
