Try asking DFS if they are willing to transfer some stock from the outbound store to the inbound store. Sign up for the Loyal T card and email their customer service before you travel.

As for duty free limits, its 1 litre of liquor for all travellers regardless of HK resident or not. My suggestion is to ask the customs officer when you're arriving inbound.

Off topic:

TPE airport is probably the cheapest place for whisky/hard liquor in East Asia. HKG DFS is a big ripoff. For example, for a bottle of Glenlivet 18 yrs, HKG sells for HKD$880, meanwhile in TPE, it is half the price. Even CX inflight sells it cheaper than HKG airport at HKD$5xx. I buy all my booze from TPE.

A lot of whisky brewers are creating special blends for the East Asian market as PRC consumers start to appreciate them and buy en masse, the brewers are running out of older vintage stuff. Basically they blend cheaper years/cask with a little bit of the good stuff, and claim they are rare/special/limited edition. Maccallan is a good example, with all these mindboggling blends. I had to go to a small liquor shop in Taipei to find a bottle of Maccallan 21 years (and certified genuine).

Thanks all for the input.

I suspect the biggest problem will be getting the duty free shop to sell me the liquor with a U.S. bound boarding pass, but we shall see.

I never had to show a boarding pass when I buy liquor. But if they ask, I'll say I left it with my friend and I'll just tell them a random flight number which they will key into the system.

I'm a bad bad person. But I do understand why OP wanted to do the 6-step process because there are some limited edition liquor that only the HKIA has. So I only do the 6-step process if there's a liquor that I really really wanted.

To clarify -- you're correct that everyone gets the same allowance. BUT, if you hold an HKID the rule is that you have to have been out of Hong Kong for at least 24 hours to qualify for that allowance. So this buy-it-then-go-out plan is problematic for HK residents who are departing that day, since technically they have zero allowance if they have only just arrived at the airport from home. I gather OP is not in this situation, though, so it's mainly a matter of his willingness to risk getting caught with more than a litre.

Well, you have a big fat problem right there. The duty-free shops in HK don't stock them, according to their website: http://www.dfs.com/en/airport-hong-k...erican-whiskey

If they did, the thing to do would be to buy it on arrival (there are arrival duty-free shops), enter HK (ie go through immigration and customs), check the bag, go back airside and continue your journey. But all rather moot. Since they don't.

Always Flyin Jul 31, 2014 10:07 pm

Since I bought a bottle of each at HKG three weeks ago, I suspect the web site is not up to date.

They did not have them at the arrival DFS store.

We'll see how it all goes tomorrow.

Yes, the airside duty free shops at HKG had both types of Jack Daniels, but my connecting flight from SIN was delayed by 30-minutes, so I had insufficient time to buy the liquor, get an escort to the arrivals level, check the bag, go through security again, and make my flight.

Well, except for the fact that my HKG-JFK flight ended-up delayed for 2:45 once I was on board . . ..

Gate/Lounge Check

Does CX allow one to gate check bags? And as an extension of this, could one check possibly from a lounge or another gate not restricted by the liquid ban?

Wouldn't work for us-bound flights as the security screening takes place before the gate, and I don't think one could check bags at another gate

Now why the US doesn't permit duty-free from HK is the real question

What is the reason alcoholic beverages are not allowed into the US from HKG vs. being allowed from most any other airport into the US?

I agree with OP, it's very annoying considering there are some great rare and impossible to find items at HKG duty free.

It's a liquid issue, not an alcohol issue. As to why there's no facility for liquids in appropriately sealed bags to get around the rule, I'm not sure why thins isn't possible at HKG, or whether it's currently possible elsewhere after some recent security changes.

They apparently sell the Sinatra at our liquor monopoly in Toronto. 300cad$

I'll be in london next year so happy to pick up a bottle and carry it over if you want to wait.

What about here. http://www.wine-searcher.com/find/jack+daniels+sinatra

Thanks. It's about US$150.00 at duty free.

I have one bottle already, and can buy more on my outbound flights, but it is just a pain to carry around between cities before my return flights to the U.S.

What about PVG or PEK to the US?

To answer the above question, I flew PVG-LAX last week on UA and there was definitely a liquid check before boarding.

I have a similar question, though. I will be flying YVR-HKG (on AC) and transiting to HKG-PVG (on CX). I have tried to figure out my duty free options from here: https://www.cathaypacific.com/cx/en_...trictions.html, but I don't quite understand the table. For example, when it says no alcohol on China domestic flights, does that mean that I'm not allowed alcohol on HKG-PVG, or any later connection from PVG-mainland China? It seems to be the only country singled out this way.

It also seems to suggest that a secure bag from YVR would be OK, but I don't remember if they offer them. Am I better off waiting until HKG and buying from DFS there?

Will the HKG-PVG flight have duty-free (I'm in J if it matters)? Should I/can I pre-order from the online catalogue?

I have 2 hours between flights (if everything is on time), but I'm hoping to enjoy dinner and a drink in the (Wing?) lounge before my flight :).

Thanks

It's no problem to buy liquor in HKG and bring to PVG. I would suggest this over YVR as the prices are a bit better at HKG in general.

I'm pretty sure duty free will also be available on board HKG-PVG. Sorry for the lack of certainty here but I never really pay close attention to this. Pricing and selection is better at the shops in the airport. There are plenty and they are not that busy so it won't take too much time.

IanFromHKG Sep 29, 2014 8:15 am

Hong Kong and China are separate customs zones, so duty-free is available on HKG-China routes and they are not regarded as domestic routes
