Same Day Moving to Later Flight
Hello all. Recently took my first CX flight and about to head back home. I'm always on DL so not sure of CX / OW same day rules.
I'm currently on CX 720 KUL - HKG then CX 840 HKG - JFK, leaving HKG around 16:00. I would like to move to CX 888, the later flight out of HKG with the stop in YVR. This one gets into JFK the next morning which I prefer as my flight home on DL from JFK is that day and would save me a hotel expense. Calling to try and change in advance I've been quoted ~$550 USD to change. I know from DL that attempting day-of changes is your best bet to have little to no additional expense. What do you guys this is my best course of action to get from 840 to 888? |
It depends a few factors
It is actually more expensive to go via that route normally which is why u were quoted a fare difference I will let others to answer your question in details |
best course of action, i would short check to HKG (then ask if you can move the JFK flight). Failing that, ask at transit desk before arrivals immigrations in HKG. if that fails and you have time to spare, go thru immigrations and ask staff. if not then u're out of luck.
i've done this once HKG-ICN to avoid change fee (move later to the redeye so i could save on hotel). it worked on me - but for your flightpair it might be different. |

Forgive my ignorance, what is Short Check? Do you mean to only check-in to my KUL - HKG flight?

short checking - from my understanding is that your luggage only goes to your stopover or wherever the transit point is before your final segment

First ask in KUL, they will give a call to HKG and ask for you. If failed, short-check to HK and ask again in HKG. The major factor is whether the later flight is so wide-open that they can confirm you a seat instantly, if yes, then you get the boarding pass of the later flight. If no, you will have to stand-by. But since you want to move to a later flight (instead of an earlier flight), you will risk that the flight is so full that CX888 has no seat for you and your original CX840 is gone plus you may be regarded as no show for CX840 even there is seat for you in CX888 (i am not sure on this no-show point, better ask the check-in staff) P.S. It is ok to check yourself to SFO, but not the luggage. Cancel check-in is easy, finding your checked luggage is not. |
Thanks for the help everyone! Will be attempting tomorrow morning.
On an unrelated note, I want to say how nice it was to just get feedback and not absurd levels of judgement and incite a back and forth between other posters that gets off topic so fast. At least the forum grass is greener here than DL (well, that and the J seat :D ) |

Btw just looked at kvs- 840 and 888 seems both booked out. Probably the OP is looking at the 26th (as it departs at 12:30am)? It shows F1 A1 J3 C3 D3 I2 W3 R2 E1 Y0 B0 H0 K0 M0 L0 V0 S0 N0 Q0 O0 on EF. J is not fully booked but lower cabin should be overbooked, not so optimistic for an instant confirmation |

Similar situation and wonder CX's practice on this.
Flying on a discount business class ticket. Outbound currently booked on the 1:30AM flight YYZ-HKG on a Sunday morning. Want to move to the 3:30PM flight on Saturday afternoon. Will CX likely be willing to do it without a charge? Both flights are currently showing J9 on KVS, so probably not full. Thanks for sharing your experience. |
