Experiences with "Priority Baggage"

Hi,

just wondering what everyone's experiences with "priority baggage" were on CX/KA - with status or with flying J/F. For those getting this with MPC status, do they tag your bag with a business class/first class tag, or do they identify it with some other means?

I've had (real) priority baggage at HKG, SIN and TPE travelling on J. It didn't work, however, at MNL.

Never tried using MPC status - only a silver anyway. Anyone?

And on that point, even though its not a OW benefit, anyone had priority baggage using OW status on Y?

In terms of FFP benefits, priority baggage is really third to lounge access and priority seating choice, IMHO. Then fourth would be business class check in. :p

Cheers

F-tags, come out first.
J-tags, since at least half of bags seem to be J-tags, it can be early or late depending on your luck.
No-tags, pretty late

nsolitude Jul 19, 2014 10:45 pm

I once saw a DM+ couple's bags coming out really fast. Everyone else had to wait at least ten more minutes.

If you are MPC silver traveling in Y, you can still get J-tag and your luggages can still come out pretty fast.

Experiences with "Priority Baggage"

I've had plenty of experiences where F tags have come out way after most of the J tags ...... though on interestingly my comment applies to CX flights. On non CX flights, particularly JAL, they do come out first.

on my last flight back from HND atleast 70% of the bags that came out all had J priority tags on there. Seemed as if everyone had some sort of status on that flight and needless to say my global entry didn't make much of a difference since our bags were one of the last to come out.

tkyoshi Jul 20, 2014 2:02 pm

Same experience:
F-Tags come out super fast
J-Tags well... lets just say from HKG everyone seems to have at least MPC-Silver, literally every bag I saw some out after the flight was "Priority"

Agent did tag my bag First Class once when I was flying in Y because the flight was delayed and I had a tight connection. It did come out as one of the first bags. Sadly my flight was further delayed and I didn't make the connection anyway.

Same for me. At HKIA, F and J tags always seem to come out together and usually after crew bags. Similar situation in SIN, SYD, MEL, AKL and JFK. In my experience, QF and BA seem to have seperate bins for F but with CX it feels like F and J are loaded together.

Curiously, why would crew bags come out first when crew are the last people to disembark the plane and make their way to the carousel?

crew bags (yellow tags) are usually pulled away and lined up next to the baggage carousel by a company representative, so the crew can retrieve their bags and leave right away.

My arrivals in LAX on CX have been fairly consistent, with F bags first, then crew bags, then priority.

Other stations (outstations in Asia, excl. HKG) have been generally any F tagged bags first, then priority, then others (I guess; I don't wait around to see once I get my bag.).

Crew normally aren't the last to the carousel. A plane doesn't take particularly long to disembark (less than 5 minutes once the doors are open, in general). Crew lanes and more straightforward immigration procedures in outports help too.

Therefore, the company generally wants the crew bags out fairly quickly so the crew aren't then standing around. On an overnight with minimum rest, any time spent wasted waiting for the bags can easily mean a delay to the first flight of the next morning. Our minimum rest is predicated on "time available to sleep" not just time off the aircraft.

For this reason, crew bags are either loaded last in a separate container, or may in fact be in the bulk cargo hold.

re hnd, thats cuz many japanese "frequent" (or ex-frequent) flyer can be a JGC member aka OWS. so they get tags.

So CX makes a habit of tagging OWS bags with priority even though OW benefits don't really include it?

Yeah I can't agree that this is providing 'good service' if its going to overflow the system so that J tags become meaningless.

I am not sure if it's a published OW benefit but when I flew other OW partners in Y before (with AA and QF) they have always given me the priority tags too.

Recently, I got the first class priority tag for QR business class.
BA also provides F tag.
JL also provides F tag.
My only one exception is JL domestic.
A very knowledgeable checkin agent doublechecked manual carefully, she didn't attach the priority tag. I have been many JL flights, but that was only one occasion I couldn't get the priority tag.

About CX's priority bag handling, I sent a claim about handling at NRT several years ago. CX Tokyo office called me to confirm a situation. Then he said that they were going to monitor and improve handling.
Anyway, at HND, IMHO, priority baggage handling is good.

To answer your question: DM and DM+ get F tag, SL and GO get J tag on CX FLTs. I don't think this distinction is made on KA FLTs, but I could be wrong.

IanFromHKG Jul 22, 2014 7:54 pm

The approach is inconsistent across different OW airlines. I have flown BA Y (within Europe) and they flatly refused to give me baggage priority tags even though I am OWE (CX DM). It isn't a OW benefit - so just think yourself lucky if you get it, and that you are getting "normal" treatment if you don't

Anyone have OWS (not OWE) experience flying on CX? Main reason I'm asking is because I'm wondering whether I should use my OWS status or MPC silver on an upcoming flight. OWS I can bring one guest into the lounge, but on the other hand, I could also arrive later at the airport and not use the lounge. And seems like baggage priority would be better for this trip, as I do want to get out of the airport quickly at the destination. :td:

normally they dont tag it. sometimes if i ended up in the F counter, they would give it to me.

mleung89 Jul 23, 2014 7:37 am

From my experience, QF Gold (=Sappire) & Platinum (=Emerald) do get J tag and F tags respectively on CX and JL.s

nsolitude Jul 23, 2014 7:42 am

Speaking of OW benefits, I once flew a BA domestic flight in South Africa (operated by Conair) and the flight agent simply refused to give me a priority tag. At that point, I did not know that tagging isn't an oneworld benefit, and as I had a meeting to go to, I kinda insisted. She reluctantly tagged me, but the tag was removed later.

Cathay Boy Jul 23, 2014 11:40 pm

Guess AA is nice. They always put their priority tags on my bags if I fly AA first.

Dont always get j tags as jl sapphire (osw) on cx

alphaod Jul 24, 2014 3:42 am

On my most recent flight home, the agent forgot to tag my checked bags with priority tags.

However they both came out with the rest of the priority stuff, so I'm assuming it's somehow flagged in the system?

I would think you can use MPC silver on the flight to get baggage priority and still bring in a guest to the lounge by showing your OWS card? OWS can access any OW lounge when flying any OW airline which fits this case.

I'm not sure though if it's good enough to just show the OWS card at the lounge, or would they insist on seeing your OWS status printed on the BP.

michaelworchid Jul 30, 2014 3:56 am

AA Plat - OWS

Got J tag

I don't think my flight HKG-PVG has F so it comes out pretty quickly. Still, there're tons of tags there.

blahter Jul 30, 2014 11:35 pm

No status

JFK-HKG F
HKG-SIN J (no F on the flight)

Got F tags and my bag came out first at SIN

You can use whichever FF programme you like for the flight, and present your OWS at the lounge to gain access. oneworld rules clearly state you can access a lounge if flying a oneworld marketed and operated flight and you present your card at a oneworld-operated lounge - http://www.oneworld.com/ffp/lounge-access. There is no provision stating that you must use the same programme for mileage accrual on the flight

When I am flying out of LHR on CX in business class I usually use the BA F lounge, as I prefer it to CX's. The flight and BP are linked to CX/MPC, but I have no problem getting access with the BP and my MPC DM card.

Just flew US Airways, got the priority tag. Was also able to use AA Admiral's Club. YES!
