JFK YVR Dec Availability
I'm looking to fly from YYZ-JFK-YVR-YYZ, in December. I'm having trouble finding availability on Dec 20-21st. Is it possible for someone to check the loading or reward availability? I have enough points on AM or AVIOS, I could book with either FFP. No status on either though. I'm willing to book in J or Y/Y+

3 days before Christmas? I doubt you can even find revenue seats ! If you're using AVIOS, then check under BA site for availability. Also preference for seats / award availability is given to the long haul sector, ie JFK-HKG instead of JFK-YVR.

I would not count on finding an award seat on this route on those dates. If you are lucky, you can try looking starting 2 weeks before and see if any last minute award seats become available.
However, as these are peak travel dates in North America your chance is slim though not impossible as it gets closer. |
Unless you plan two separate awards, you can't book flights between two Canadian cities via an intermediate US city. You would require one award between YYZ-JFK-YYZ and a second on CX between JFK-YVR-JFK. It is unlikely you'll find premium seats between JFK-YVR-JFK at this time of year in advance but F and some J often open up within a week of flight time. Not sure Y+ seats are even available as awards...nor is this class of service available on CX flights with F cabins on this route.

OP, how flexible are your travel dates? I just did a quick search and found Y+ redemption availability on JFK-YVR on Dec. 23, if you can bump back your departure a day or two. Not sure how you'd get to JFK -- that might require a phone call to check for AA availability. Or I think the BA site can return availability on AA. |

You're flying at a very peak season.
While there's not that huge of demand on CX' flight from JFK to YVR, you have to remember this flight's final destination is HKG. Being close Xmas / Winter holiday, CX will have no problem filling up the plane for this route, or even often times - oversold. So if you must travel on those dates, I would start looking into revenue tickets. Can't advise on the YYZ-JFK route though, might be best to ask in the AA forum. |

I thought since there were direct JFK-HKG flights that people weren't going to go through the hassle of JFK-YVR-HKG. Then thinking that JFK-YVR would be pretty empty.

Awards at this stage for the peak season are unlikely in any cabin - even closer in I would imagine. Y/Y+ looks oversold already for 12/20 and 12/21, so options are limited unless you want to pay $4k for J. We fly JFK-YVR almost every year at this time and the flights are usually 100% full - and a lot of the traffic is to YVR.
