Upgrade Redemption Question
Fellow FTers,
I have a confirmed upgrade redemption in U class (originally bought R class and upgraded) for the 24th of Aug, but would like to change the date to the 29th. To my surprise (not), CX has no availability in U class on that day or any other days nearby. I requested that I be waitlisted, but agent said this was not possible because Y+ was also sold out on that day and he needed to confirm me on that day in Y+ before he could waitlist me. Is he correct? Is there a way to bypass this because I am currently on waitlist in R class for that day and after checking flight availability it seems I'm more likely to clear an upgrade to J than getting a Y+ seat.... |
He is correct. He needs to confirm the underlying ticket before confirming the upgrade. Both must be available.

Sorry for the thread hijacking. I am in a similar shoes, wait listing for upgrade to U from R. I have been put on diamond level priority. There are still 15 empty seats on Seat Counter in J cabin. It's exactly 15 days out. When do you think they will open up more upgrade seats? My upgrade will expire in 10 days. Do you think I got a shot at getting it?

Upgrade Redemption Question
How do you know that 15 biz seats are empty? J9C6 just mean that CX is willing to sell 6 seats in C, and 9 in J and these aren't necessarily mutually exclusive events, and, a single C booking could reduce that to J8C5 (or anything else, actually).
To me, all that means is that CX is 'willing to sell 9 biz seats', and some of these could lead to overbooking (like if they have sold none in first, they'll likely oversell biz). What I'd typically look for is, the number of seats available in I (cheapest biz) and have a subjective view depending on how booked out the other fareclasses (esp higher ones-F/A in this case) are. 15 days out, in peak season, I'd not give up, but they'll likely make you sweat till the last minute- and I would definitely not count them opening availability a given. Edit: also look at how booked out Y &Y+ are. If likely overbooked, a) higher chances of clearing your waitlist (to free a seat in the back), and, b) you might need to use the miles after all- DM/overbooked/BN1 would have a good shot at on op-up. |

I'd never ever take the seatmap as a guide to how booked out a flight is.
The assumption that every ticketed J passenger will have a default seat assignment, imho, is not the most reasonable of ones to make. Not knowing anything else - i'd actually wager that CX has <15 unsold biz seats on that flight left. |
