Baggage Allowance Question
I will be traveling TPE-NRT-ORD-DAY next March. The TPE-NRT segment is on CX, while NRT-ORD and ORD-DAY is on AA. Checking in at TPE with CX I will have 2 pieces of luggage probably just below 23kg each.
Will CX apply the baggage allowance rules under the piece system or the weight system. I assume since my final destination will be the U.S., they will apply the piece system, but since I am only flying CX to NRT and AA the rest of the way, I am wondering if they might use the weight system. |
US-bound transpac flight entitles you to two pieces of checked bags (each under 23kg) with no charge. I think you should be fine on either front. I have gone overweight (within 2 or 3 kgs) before with my checked bags and the CX ground staff didn't blink.

Thanks! I just really wouldn't want them to apply the weight system on me since the maximum combined weight can only be 20kg under this system. I would be traveling with 40-45kg of baggage, so the extra fees that apply over 20kg in the weight system would really add up.

Granted, others might have different experience with this. But I have never had any problem checking my baggage - and they always inevitably went over by 1 or 2 kgs - whenever I traveled in Y. In J, this was a non-issue for me. Good luck!

If on 1 single TKT, AA rule applies per MSC, so 23kg*2pc. If on separate TKTs, theoretically CX would use weight system, but I doubt they will if you show them connecting AA TKTs.

Actually, the IATA MSC rules were superceded by DOT rules last January and have been enforced since July on all itineraries terminating in the USA. The new rules provide that whatever the allowance is for the first segment is the [U]minimum[U] for the entire itinerary. Thus, presuming that OP is flying TPE-DAY with connections in NRT & ORD, the CX allowance will apply to his journey.
