Schedule change = short connection in Dubai
I’m booked on separate tickets LHR-DXB (BA) and DXB-HKG (CX) later this year. The scheduled connection time when I booked was over the minimum connecting time of 90 mins. The times for both flights have now changed and the connection is five minutes short of the MCT.
I’ve no qualms about making the connection if the BA flight arrives on time – or even a bit late. T1/T1 connections are pretty easy in Dubai and the gate where the BA flight usually arrives is really convenient for the transfer point. But I’m a bit worried about what happens if there is a more significant delay. Would CX at least put me on the next flight to HKG? (The ticket is changeable but with a fee). Should I contact CX and ask them to put a note in the booking so they know where I’m coming from? Maybe they would send someone to the arrival gate to meet me if a delay made the connection particularly tight? I won’t have checked luggage so they won’t otherwise know that I’m in transit. Thanks in advance for any wisdom :) |
If you have 2 tickets and are delayed, you are at the mercy of CX. There are anecdotal reports on FT that they will accommodate you.
Since the flight time was changed, you may be able to change that flight with no penalty. |

Simply not true.
The oneworld reaccomodation policy would apply even when on separate tickets providing both inbound and outbound tickets are marketed and operated by oneworld carriers. The inbound carrier would be responsible for getting you to your final destination |
If OP is on two separate tickets and is now below MCT, I'd expect that BA in LHR would simply refuse to through check him to HKG stating MCT rules.

Generally this would be fine since you can interline these two tickets for sure upon check-in. And I'm almost certain CX wouldn't charge you if you missed the flight flying in on oneworld carrier.
My concern as midlevels mentioned would be the refusal to interline since you're under the 90 minute mark. I'd call BA and reconfirm this connection time and their policy. Normally you can get a refund / free change if the schedule change impacts you negatively so if you want to change the flights I would believe they'd let you.

Thanks for the advice. I’m loathe to change either of the flights, which would mean losing a day of my UK holiday at one end and my NZ holiday at the other (connecting through from HKG). Plus I’d end up with a day or night in DXB, which is somewhere I try to avoid. Think I’ll stick to plan A and hope for on-time flights. If there’s a delay out of LHR I may try contact CX from there to see what can be done.
Thanks again :-) |
