MPC : Silver to Gold
I am one regional trip short of making it to Gold. I can either do Taipei which is the cheapest way to get 5 sectors (but need to go through the hassle of getting a visa) or just do a trip to Singapore or Bangkok.
When I told my brother about it, he says that Silver and Gold are pretty much the same if not for the extra baggage allowance and since we normally travel on J, we rarely use up all the 30kgs anyway. So is it worth going through all the trouble to get to Gold? I may have a work trip soon and normally the office gets me a economy ticket then I cover the upgrade to I-class. I was just wondering if I should do it now to get to Gold or just fly a direct flight on PR. I really don't mind staying at HKIA for a few hours...plus CX provides a lot of flights between Manila and Hong Kong so connection time isn't much of a problem. |
Depend on your flying pattern, the most important benefit is Seat Guarantee which guarantee a seat for you 72 hours out, which is critical for PVG / PEK commuter route. Since I get Gold I have been paying V-subclass fare to fly into Shanghai Hongqiao, the convenience is unbeatable and that flight is routinely sold out in Y or J and you cannot get anything less than K-subclass if without the guarantee.
And with Gold you have higher OP-UP rate than SL (I got 2/40 when I was MPC SL due to 5 year anniversary / Xmas peak season, 2 / 16 when I was MPC GO on sold out flight - which I use seat guarantee to get seats) It's also the convenience when packing that I used to be comfortably fly with 20KG luggage limit but with MPC Gold I just don't bother and throw everything in now |
Simple - email MPC and see if they can "waive" that.
You may be surprised somehow. |

Since the OP travels in J most of the time anyway, being SL or GO makes almost no difference.

It also depends whether you want to be able to bring a guest (who would otherwise have no access) to lounge.

if he does not have correct visa they wont check him in and if he gets to the gate with online check and is denied he still wont get credited flights as he will be listed as a no show

If you doubt the benefits of Gold, I don't think you need it.

I have been gold for two years and see no difference in benefits from when I was silver. I actually had better luck getting op-ups with silver...go figure :D

Is this guaranteed booking for revenue flights or award flights as well?

Guaranteed Booking is one benefit that I always end up using specially now since its summer season in NA.
