What to do doing a 9-hr layover?
 

CP just changed our flight in mid-January from HKG to JFK - from a nonstop 6:30 pm flight to a 1 am flight via YVR. The change is actually okay with me because we only had a 3 hr layover on a flight from Auckland to HKG - so it would have been a killer to do two back-to-back 14 hr flights. However, we are now in HKG from 3:30 pm until 1 am and I don't want to pay $250 to stay in a hotel esp since we are not spending the night. I have access to the CX business class lounge and they sound pretty nice - but it is a long time to hang out esp when I cannot get a place to lay down and nap.

Saw discussions about taking a ferry to Macua - can someone provide some details on this and what is involved including the approximate costs. May be interesting to do and go have dinner and walk around.

The Traveller's Lounge has small rooms you can sleep in. Nominal fee, or many credit cards give complimentary access to it. (My SG Citi PremierMiles card does for example).

Or if you decide against Macau, take an Airport Express (discount fair for sameday return) to the city and walk around. Just in time to go to the top of Victoria Peak for sunset. Take a ferry to TST, see the promenade, and then head on back.

I personally wouldn't have minded just a 3 hr stopover (and AKL-HKG is by no means 14 hrs!) simply because you just keep yourself awake for the whole AKL-HKG flight and then you'll crash early on the HKG-YVR flight and adjust a little better to the time zone you'll end up in.

There's heaps to do - just depends on what you want to do. I personally could be happy enough just staying at the airport although that's not what I did when I had a day layover in HKG between my flight from LAX then the one to SYD.

I highly recommend against going to Macau, you just don't have any time. It's atleast 1.5 hours each way with immigration...

But you have plenty of time to go into HK and see some sights or grab a meal before your 1am flight.

Yeah, and I've been in hourlong immigration queues coming into Macau, which would just add extra time to things. Not the best way to spend a limited amount of time.

But going into the city is likely a better bet, and your flight's at a perfect time to grab dinner, see some sights and come back late for your departure.
