Complimentary upgrade

I'm not understanding how this works for DM on Marco Polo. If I purchase a ticket in a K, M, L, V, Q, S, G, or N fare class, do I get an upgrade to Business?

I am confused with

"Only applicable to Cathay Pacific paid tickets in fare classes C and J."

There's no complimentary upgrade for DM unless it's due to operational reasons or you hit some kind of milestone (which isn't a guarantee)

Are you Marco Polo Club DM?

You can only use Asiamiles to upgrade on certain fare classes only. Namely K, B, H, Y.

Other fare codes you quoted allow you to earn miles only.

Complimentary / or operational upgrades are only based on overbooked flights. It is not a guarantee. As DM , you should know that.

OP is an AA EXP, so he may think that CX is like some US airlines that give out complimentary upgrades to their elite members.

Sorry, CX is not AA. No such thing as throw-away upgrades. Freebie upgrade only happens when the cabin is fully booked, and then you wait in line in a pre-set pecking order. DM, GO, and then OWE (AA ExPlat).

Of course, that doesn't stop AA ExPlat that I see often make a scene (and a fool of yourselves) by arguing for comp upgrade simply because you're AA ExPlat and are shock CX doesn't kowtow to you like AA does.

No offence, but I don't think the above FTers understood your question - as it indeed can be interpreted in different ways.

I guess your question relates to the "Guaranteed Business Class seat" benefits CX DMs enjoy at the moment - that's why you quote the term "Only applicable to Cathay Pacific paid tickets in fare classes C and J."

Correct me if I am wrong but I think you misunderstood the meaning of "Only applicable to Cathay Pacific paid tickets in fare classes C and J." which associates with the "Guaranteed Business Class seat" benefit.

This term means if you are a DM, bought a business class fare under class C or J, CX will guarantee such a Business class seat even Business class is full/oversold. This is a guaranteed benefit. However it doesn't mean CX will guarantee you a Business class seat when you buy a Y ticket under whatever class it is.

As some of the comments above indiciate, CX does not offer "complimentary upgrade" to DMs like what AA does.

Hope it helps to solve your confusion.

+1 ^

I totally agree with the way CX handles upgrades. The only way to guarantee an upgrade is to pay for it using cash or upgrading with miles.

(a bit off-topic .... this is my first post as a GO - status just updated this morning on MPC site!)

No. Among the fare classes OP quoted, only K, M, L, and V earn miles, not Q, S, G, and N.
