Do you think this is because there are too many DMs so they cancelled this benefit? And the reason why there are so many DMs is the free status from Amex which also means those members can easily transfer Amex MR to Asia miles and then use it to get those free U class seats?

I feel that CX is feeling all superior these days since it has performed much better than its regional peers and that it can bully its most valuable supporters. :D

Have you even check how their regional peers are performing? I don't see a 61% drop in profit in its regional peers such as ANA
JALPak, if you stripe out the gains from previous year, the profit decrease in % terms was lesser than 61%! |

And the Amex offer is nearly a year ago now, does anyone know if it is still accepting new DMs? If not, the Amex effect on the number of DM should start to diminish. |

I'm not refering to the percentage in profit drop when comparing to regional peers. I am rather comparing the absolute profit figure and % margin where CX is ahead than the big names such as SQ, TG, NH, etc...

another "enhancement" I just experienced is that they do not let me (DM) take a bassinet seat anymore (without an infant, in J), even when all bassinet seats are empty now AND I'm completely ok with giving up the seat if there's really a need in the end (i.e. all other infant seats occupied by infants in the end, which I don't expect will happen in the next few days since we're flying this weekend). otherwise my family have seats all scattered around in the cabin now, and they still gave me super hard time releasing one of the infant seats to me so that we could sit together. in the past they're quite happy doing it for DM. but now again claimed that it's a "feature" in the new system and they can't do it anymore.
another new feature of the new system seems to be...in the old system, redemption booking booked using my miles can be viewed on my "summary" page plus can be viewed in the detailed page...but now they are only shown on my "summary" page and once I clicked on it, it said it cannot be shown because of some system error or something. some MPO supervisor also just confirmed it's a new "feature" of the new system. plus every time when I called, almost every agent keep on saying "oh system hangs again", "system is slow", etc every few minutes...yesterday it took me like an hour doing some award refund plus a redemption booking...and today another 30 mins just messing around with the seat arrangement of one flight. too bad I still have some 500-600k miles expiring EACH year for the next few years...but starting from now will indeed make sure not to put too much more miles into AM anymore...can't completely avoid, of course...but cannot put all eggs into one basket that's breaking down... |

otherwise our family's seats would be quite scattered around in the cabin. if you know what I mean, usually in a pretty full J cabin (2-2-2) most/all aisle seats are taken first and only single window seats left. and I guess the chance of a baby getting on isn't that big since it's just a few days before departure (not scientific of course, but just my guess).
and not talking about traveling together this time...usually during my individual travel before, when there's no other aisle seats available and only windows left (or even in cases when only the last 1-2 rows are available and I really wanted to be sit more upfront), they usually would very readily offer to put me in the bassinet row themselves (but just always make sure I'm aware that I need to give up the seat if a baby turns up in the end, and I'm always perfectly ok with this rule - but the chance of this happening is just quite low anyway, don't think I have experienced this before, esp in cases like now where all/both of the bassinet seats still available). |

But CX isn't performing well (or as well as they were previously) and saw some pressures in their premium cabin margin. Maybe that's what triggered this change in policy?

CX is performing better than most carriers out there including that of SQ!

It depends on your criteria. CX isn't performing well IMHO when they have profit drop of > 60% and premium margin is eroding. If you only look at the margin, CX is still higher than carriers like SQ and NH but it won't last long if the trend continues.

In this environment, can you name any airline that is doing well? At least CX is extremely well managed to weather the storm!

http://news.sky.com/home/business/article/16179274 The company behind British Airways saw its profits rise more than 80% in 2011, thanks largely to the return of business travellers. International Airlines Group, which was created by the merger between BA and Iberia, made a pre-tax profit of £425m in the period - a rise of 499%. The more reliable figure for analysts however, in the wake of the tie-up, was an 81% increase in operating profit to £344m. IAG saw a 15% increase in what it calls premium traffic in the period - essentially business travellers - while overall revenues rose by more than 10%. Etihad Airways has reported record revenues of nearly US$1 billion (Dh3.67bn) for the first three months of the year, with passenger figures up by more than 500,000 on the same period last year. ... James Hogan, the president and chief executive of Etihad, said the airline's record-breaking figures showed it was on course to hit its $5bn annual revenue target this year. ... First-quarter revenues were $989m compared with $770m for the first three months of last year. This was a rise of 28.5 per cent, while the number of seats filled per flight also hit a record high of 76.5 per cent compared with 72.7 per cent for the same period last year Asiana 4Q2011 operating profit up 45%, expects 32% growth in 2012 All Nippon Airways said on Friday it aims to boost operating profit by more than a fifth in the next financial year as it expands its international service but holds down costs with the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. ... ANA said in a statement it will target operating profit of JPY¥110 billion (USD$1.4 billion) in the year beginning April and JPY¥130 billion in the year after that, up from JPY¥90 billion forecast for this financial year. And in your case, you had a chance to upgrade at the airport by up-selling your ticket to K class and redeem for an upgrade award but you chose not to. So it's not impossible to use your miles, it's just harder and you chose not to use it. This unpublished benefit is not a guarantee. No one should feel they are entitled to it and should just be grateful while it lasts. |
