baggage allowance
I need to get from SFO--HGK--MNL
I have flown this route many times (paid) and they allow me 2x23kg checked luggage since I am coming from the United States I am Marco Polo Silver This time I was gonna use Asia Miles to book the SFO--HKG segment and buy the HKG--MNL leg. I called marco polo and they told me that I could get my luggage checked all the way through at the SFO desk. I would get 2x23kg luggage on the SFO--HKG leg, but since I was buying the HKG--MNL leg, I would only be entitled to 30KG of baggage. Qustions: Since my luggage would be checked through all the way to MNL, do you think they would have a chance to reweigh it for the HKG--MNL leg? Do you think the SFO check in desk would make note of the lesser allowed baggage? for the second leg? for both questions, I dont think they would even take notice of it. also, for the return trip, the bags would be mostly empty. |

Even your 2nd leg is a revenue flight, your luggage allowance will be carried over to 2X23 kg automatically. But remember - you must show a reservation within 30 days to prove that you are transferring or transiting. |
What is the policy if you are ticketed from the US to HKG and then have a seperate reservation for flights within Asia? I was told that I am subject to the weight rules for flights within asia (20 kg total) even though I came from the US. I had to pay 500 hkd for 7kg but had no issues when I was in ICN or TPE.

The agent is definitely wrong.

Where did you get this from? OP is travelling on separate TKTs.
The key is the luggage checks all the way - so do they offload your baggage at HKG and re-calculate your allowance and charge you again. Beside, it is not only an airline policy, I think it is a IATA policy that as soon as you can show a reservation from/to North America within 30 days, you get the same NA allowance even the route uses weight concept, regardless of the airlines traveling. Like last time, I was allowed with NA allowance on my CA HKG-PEK with CX boarding pass (and CA even increases my allowance because of my *G). |

yes, I think the agent may be technically correct.....but in practice, there is no time to re-weigh the bags for the second leg of the trip...they will be checked through all the way to MNL, with priority tags on them as well :)
the only way I could possibly be caught is if the agents in SFO enforce the rules. But they will most likely just check the bags dont exceed 2x23kg. thanks for your replies. |

Doing CX from Del-hnd, then JL to sfo. CX seems like they allow only 66lbs. Few questions, w the IATA rule, do I get the JL allowance as its my last leg, but separate PNR, or only CX allowance as they are my first airline? Any top tier status allow more allowance?

As long as you issue seperate tickets, you are not entitled to the baggage allowance on your transpacific flight. It is of course up to the individual airline to either honor or reject the request for the PC system when you're only entitled the weight system. If you're travelling on one carrier, its easier for CX to check through to CX. So for the OP, you shouldn't have a problem.

It certainly is NOT an IATA policy !
Under IATA Baggage Resolution 302, MSC has the ultimate say of baggage allowance: http://www.evaair.com/NR/rdonlyres/F...lution_302.pdf Furthermore, under US DOT Order 2009-9-20, which establish the U.S. exception, specify the final destination rule applies. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/unite...ggage-fee.html In other word, chanp will be allowed for 2 pieces of baggage up to 23 kg each. |

Baggage allowance
Hi All,
Hoping this is the right place for my question. I am a BA Silver so OW Sapphire. I have flights booked for Aug/Sept this year PEK-HKG return on Dragonair economy class :( and then HKG-Denpasar return on CX business class. I booked the Dragonair flights as redemption flights via BA using Avios & a small amount of cash but the CX flight we've paid for, no Avios used but pure hard cash. My question is this: We get 20kg allowance on Dragonair but 30kg allowance on CX. Can we take somewhere inbetween that as a OW Sapphire even though the flights were booked seperately? Advice with this is much appreciated. |
