Converting Cathay Miles

I'm sorry if this has been addressed before but can anyone tell me if I can convert Cathay miles to anything (BA?) ? I have some that are about to expire and I rarely fly on this airline. Or, is there anything else I could use them for?

Thank you !

Essentially, no. But in Hong Kong you can convert them to cash vouchers for use in ParknShop at a rate that isn't too bad.

How many do you have?

IMO just use your points to redeem something that you can easily sell on eBay, get cash, and go from there.

Miles nearing expiry

I have a similar question. My miles of 13,000+ expire in May 2012. Presently my passport is only good until late Feb. 2012, which means that I cannot travel until it is renewed next year. My info is that a passport has to be valid for at least 6 months in order to be admitted to the country in question. Passport renewal has at one time taken four months for me!!!
I just missed a chance of a hotel stay abroad and did not credit it to Asia miles.
I have looked through their retail partners, which all seems to be located in Hong Kong or Macao.
Provided I cannot take a flight to Hong Kong before May because of passport issues, what possibilities are there for somebody living in the U.S.?
There is always points.com, I guess. Will a small miles transfer from another airline qualify?
Thanks for any insights.

Seeing that it seems like you want to visit HKG in the near future anyways, why not get a new passport now and fly AA/CX to HKG?

Thanks Santander. I shall try that and see where it takes me.@:-)

buying something was easy

I bought a couple of iPhone cases and the points are gone. Thanks for the advice. It was the easiest thing to do.

Is that all that 3k points/miles gets you? I would hope that there are other redemptions towards Intl flights that would have worked better?

I ask because I really regret spending miles recently to get a iPod Touch 8GB from UA. I would much rather have used those miles towards a flight reward even if it would have cost me $ to get more miles.

3k points really doesn't get you far. you can't get anything useful nor upgrade to anything. I think the best deal was UA cinema tickets for 2000points.
15k miles can get you to shanghai or Taipei from hkg.

Surely you renew your passport now and they add on the extra months for renewing early, seems odd not to travel because your passport will not have 6 months before expire date on it ? its not like a passport costs a fortune - unless you are a person from UK where those people pay huge money for a passport. My work mate had his passport renewed after only two years because it was full and they just extend the period. He still had to pay over one hundred pounds though.

Thanks, Bendachentaiwan, for this suggestion.@:-) I shall ask my embassy for issuing a new passport with the extra months extended. Have never heard of it, on the contrary was always warned about renewing too early as I would be losing these extra months. In the past, I have always lost these extra months. It is worth a try.
