AA coded, BA operated
 

Hi,

I just got comped to CX gold due to work and have been looking for info on this. I want to do a personal trip and saw that I won't get any miles if booking with BA, but the same flight can also be booked through AA with an AA code, though still operated by BA. Will I get miles for CX for this code share? Also, do I get minimum 500 flight miles for the same code share for flights less than 500 miles? Thanks.

Please note that when you book with BA and they don't give you miles ... due to the booking class, then booking with AA but operated by BA will be the same situation. If you don't get the miles, then you won't be getting the minimum miles and sector count either.

AA coded flights earn 100% AsiaMiles for classes Y, B, C*, G, H, K, L, M, N, Q, R*, S, V, W, X*

BA coded flights earn 100% for YBH, and 50% for KLM.

As I understand it, then if you book the AA codeshare you will be granted AsiaMiles according to the class you booked.

The class would be S/N if booked directly with BA, but it will be all N if AA coded, but operated by BA. The price will be the same though. I noticed that AA N gets 100% miles, but just wonder if it applies to code shares operated by BA.

If I do indeed get miles, will I also get 500 minimum miles for the short flights? I also couldn't find this part of information on the site.

I don't know what Guy Betsy is saying, but you should get 100% on AA-coded BA-operated FLTs. 500 miles minimum does not apply for AM.

Really? Didn't happen to me once...! But that was a few years ago ! I just didn't bother with the claim as AM said that my flight although booked on AA flight number, didn't qualify as it was operated by BA and the booking code on BA stands.

On a couple of RTW trips this year this was an issue.

Flew LHR-JFK on BA metal, booked to AA and got the AA mileage accrual.

Earlier on in the year flew AKL-SCL on Lan Chile. This is a code share flight with QF, and had to make sure the booking was on LA, otherwise much lower accrual across the Pacific.

I am pretty sure that if the TKT shows "AA" then the miles should be earned according to AA's table in AM, provided that the FLT is operated by OW or AS / QX. I think this is generally the same across OW.

I've called up the wonderfully helpful folks at MPO Beijing Mandarin line (trying the MPO Tsuen Wan Canto line gets you dropped into the wonderfully useless voice mail):

Me: If I book AA6143 (http://www.panynj.gov/airports/fligh...pdate=20111012) under N ("en") class from AA, do I get miles?

MPO Beijing: AA6143 is operated by BA. You cannot earn AM on N class on an BA flight.

Me: Does this apply to all OW flights for AM earning? I must refer to the operating airline's eligible classes?

MPO Beijing: Yes.

I had an experience last year where I booked MH9723 HKG-KUL on B and it was operated on CX metal (CX723). I tried keying in my MPO number in check-in but cos I was ticketed on the MH flight, nothing got accrued. Had I ticketed B on CX723, I believe I would have earned miles (but it was sold out).

As a result of the above two experiences I believe the rules stand as - "you must ticket through an OW airline and your class of travel must be eligible accrual per the operating airline's set of eligible classes for AM accrual".

Two points/questions:

1. If the reverse occurred - you booked N class through BA codeshare on an AA metal flight, would you get miles? I think yes.

2. What if the operating partner's not AM-eligible? CX on MH metal for instance?

MPO Beijing: ***NO miles at all***

According to the AM web site, she's right: "# You may not be able to earn Asia Miles on some codeshare flights. Please check with the relevant airline reservation office or call Asia Miles Service Hotline."

Yes. And in fact, if your operating carrier's not an AM partner, you won't earn AM at all! (see CX1726 response, above).

I flew KUL-HKG, CX on MH metal last year (L or V I can't remember). At check-in I was guided to MH desk on basis that this was MH operated. They refused to enter the MP card details. I didn't raise a fuss at the time and filled in the standard claim form on the website. This was rejected automatically. I then replied in detail via email explaining why this was a qualifying flight. Got the credit (incl MPC) a few weeks later.

toplayer - this is contrary to what MPO Beijing explained to me. Either MPO Beijing's wrong about MH metal (and also wrong about BA metal also) or you're very lucky to get someone who didn't know about the operating carrier elgibility rule to read your appeal.

I was checked in by CX for MH9723 at HKG. My travelling companions were on CX award tix, I remember (barely) we all checked in at the CX desk at KUL too despite I having MH tix.

Maybe its on a case by case basis, dug up the email, relevant parts below (actually Jan 2009) :-

"May we start off by apologizing for the delay in replying to your
correspondence; due to high email volumes, it took us longer than
expected to get back to you. Moreover, please accept our sincere
apologies for the incorrect rejection.

Please allow us to explain that different airlines will have different
miles credits regulations for codeshare flights. Therefore, not all
codeshare flights are eligible for mileage credits.

For eligible codeshare flights, miles are credited according to the
marketed carrier that is the designator shown on the ticket. For your
information, if your flight is booked with Cathay Pacific, it is
eligible for mileage credit. However, mileage will be awarded for
flying on eligible fare classes only.

This is to confirm mileage for the following activity has now been
credited to your account:

XX January 2009 CX1724 Kuala Lumpur - Hong Kong"
