Retained CX Status
So i am short of about 3,000 miles to retain my silver status, my membership year ended last April 2011, i just logged on to my account today and surprised to see that CX has reset mileage and retained my silver status until April of 2012! I did not phone MPC nor sent them an email, very nice gesture, would surely keep me flying with CX!

Wish that happens to me.. :(
Mine's expiring the end of this month.. My next CX flight won't be in another 2 months.. |
apparently if you 'overqualified' last year for Silver (say you had 40k club miles and renewed silver), its reported that extra 10k miles will be 'considered' towards these renewals. Was that the case for you?
Also your flying pattern (i.e. revenue generated) appears to help their judgement? It seems if you were flying mostly Biz and fall short of Silver they would reaccomodate (my friend was only 23k and renewed silver as he had 2 long houl J-travel at one year). But if you were flying on ultra-cheapo HK-LHR V-class return that feel just short by even 40 miles, i read stories of being dumped to green. |

I was 1300 miles short of DM and they kept me at Gold. I had to call them up and extend it. I fly all sorts of classes, mostly in J and only personal holidays in V. So I have racked up quite a lot of long haul to LHR and JFK in Y. still i guess CX doesnt like me so much!

Qualifying and re-qualifying are usually very different in degree of leniency. To qualify for DM, Cathay told me quite literally not one mile less which is fair enough.
They are usually extra ordinarily generous if you are a regular F flyer, I have a few family members that were rounded up from around 100,000 before. Chung |

Chung Not in my experience. There may have been a change recently, but I have certainly been upgraded to DM from GO before when I was much further short, by around 5000 miles one time. I do fluctuate between GO and DM depending on the year. |
I made my first GO with only 51K in the books. But I've racked that up in less than 3 months and thought maybe that was the reason for a significant early upgrade from SL to GO.
The irony is the year before that each year I would fly 55K total with CX and their MPC told me I wouldn't get GO if I don't fly 60K with them. Maybe they've finally given me a break back then. |
i think rate of accumulation does play a role. One year I fell 3k short of Silver and they requalified me to Silver... Also when I got ruthlessly dropped to Green from Gold, and ranked up 20k miles in 3mths they made me a silver again (this was 1 J longhaul return + 1 longhaul Economy).
However subsquently I earned 50k miles all in paid J (LHR, NRT, JFK) + paid Y YVR, as a silver, but was not granted gold when renewal came but they allowed me extra 1mth to makeup the short-fall to qualify to gold. so the bottomline to me is (1) qualification to higher tier is a lot more strict than retaining existing status (2) rate of accumulation is a different formula. (3) higher cabin fares definitely help increase your flexibility for qualification to higher tier in terms of extra-time to make it up. |

So i got my renewed SL card today which is valid for another 12 month, together with it was a letter from MPC that i was quite short of the required mileage, but they are retaining my status for another 12 months for my continued support.
