Upgrading Specific Segments

I'm booked in for a D class TPE-HKG-YYZ-HKG-TPE, but wanted to upgrade (using miles) the HKG-YYZ-HKG sectors to F only. Does anyone know if it's possible?

Also will CX charge me for a no show HKG-TPE or can I choose to skip the segment altogether? From what I see on CX's ules, you can, but I would like clarification.

Thanks

I'd like to know the answer for the first part, I did something similar TPE-HKG-SFO-HKG-TPE a year or so back upgrading J-F with miles. I'm thinking I probably just wasted some miles for the TPE-HKG sector that never became F.

Regarding skipping the last sector, physically it absolutely is possible I've done it before. If you have checked luggage tell the people in YYZ to check your luggage to HKG only - that is no problem. Usually when they do this, they can't give you the boarding pass for the onward flight. Then, upon arriving in HK just go to immigration. I try to be a bit more polite and don't check-in for the HKG-TPE sector, figuring it might be more of a hassle for CX to have a pax with a boarding pass not board (vs having a no-show who never gets a BP).

Lastly, I think if they wanted to CX could probably enforce some sort of consequence. MPC membership is at their discretion, which I think would be the most obvious repercussion if they decided to act against you. I don't really think that'd be clever on CX's part to do that...but just saying, I think they could. I think the chances regardless of them doing anything to you after doing this once or twice are nearly nil though - what if someone has a legitimate reason for ditching their last sector? I've had THAT situation happen to me as well: I was on a ticket TPE-North America via HKG, but upon arriving in North America realized I'd have to go straight to PEK on my return for an urgent meeting. Instead of going to TPE (where I was scheduled to spend a day golfing with a friend) I took my flight to HKG and then connected to PEK instead, ditching the HKG-TPE sector. I had no choice. At that point I think I was in the neighborhood of 75k or more USD/revenue a year on CX alone, and I have to say if CX decided to cancel my MPC membership or book me the fare difference over that I would've been pi$$ed. I already was disappointed I had to go to PEK as it was.

Yes you can upgrade segments of a trip only.

Officially you have to fly all segments, but am not aware of the penalty actually being imposed. In the end you did pay for it already. You can always call them and let them know your plans changed and you will not take the last leg.

Is the number of miles needed to do a round trip upgrade from J -> F any different between HKG/YYZ and between TPE/HKG/YYZ -- I thought it would be the same i.e. 105,000?

Did exactly what the OP is asking about last month. There is a mileage difference and not worth it. Watch out tho- your OLCI will get messed up as they split your locator and you won't be able to OLCI the F sectors. Not that it really matters. Enjoy!

i am sure you've already checked but the number of miles between TPE-HKG may be so small that including it you might still be in the same award zone. i know upgrading TPE-HKG-YVR costs the same as HKG-YVR for instance.

marcuslai and ACORD- I suddenly don't feel so smart anymore. Can't believe it didn't even cross my mind! DOH! Thanks for your suggestion.

Could you elaborate? Mileage difference for what?

105k miles J to F upg for HKG-YYZ-HKG whereas something like 127k for TPE-HKG-YYZ-HKG-TPE.

Can someone clarify how i might be able to avoid overcharging of miles? I did check on the asiamiles website, and it's 105000 for tpe-hkg-yyz round trip.

The miles needed is the same whether or not TPE-HKG-TPE is included, assuming that HKG is transfer only on both ways. For TPE-HKG-LAX-HKG-TPE, though, there is a difference.

This is incorrect. If you get an agent who miscalculated the miles required for your trip, you should call MPO to get a refund. However, it is true that the OLCI will be messed up, even though OP can choose to only upgrade on certain segments.

You can have a HKG stopover once without additional miles.

Right! I was trying to say that HKG cannot be stopover on both ways, but I didn't word my thought correctly.

CPwingwalker Mar 4, 2011 2:10 am

I got a lousy agent then:-( didn't matter as there was no F on either of my HKG-TPE legs.

b-kpf Mar 4, 2011 12:27 pm

I just called mpc to confirm the D ticket, and he said that date change and flight change fee (if I choose to upgrade) is subject to the rules of the paid ticket. Is that correct? Also, can someone who's flown on hkg-tpe or vice versa confirm that apart from the occasional flight, there is no F? The FAQ still says there's a 74A but the agent's tellin me there are no flights with F
