873 gear problem, returns to SFO

Just happened to catch this while listening to ZOA (Oakland Center) on liveatc.net. CX 873 Sun Dec 5 (sched arr HKG Mon Dec 6) has unstowable gear and is now dumping fuel and returning to SFO.

Compfreak Dec 5, 2010 2:52 am

We just landed in sfo

Sam7 Dec 5, 2010 3:05 am

it's 74A? umm...seems like CX has had quite a few problems with their 74A lately...

Compfreak Dec 5, 2010 3:08 am

Ya, 74A. Currently at the gate, pilot will wait for engineers to determine if we'll be able to depart tonight.

Compfreak Dec 5, 2010 3:14 am

Estimated time for departure, 1 hour (from 2:13AM).

First officer coming around to talk to the FC passengers. They're checking to see if they can takeoff based off the crew's flying time limit.

Which 74A is this?

If it is B-HOP then it would really start to scare me...

Irish lad Dec 5, 2010 7:33 am

From ACARS info, looks like B-HOT is the plane in question.

aa767flyer Dec 5, 2010 8:35 am

Just came over to SFO on HOT Thursday. I'm on the 77W to HKG today 12/5

And right now both flightstats and the HKIA website is showing CX873 estimated to arrive Dec 6 ahead of the 6:45am schedule?

A/C, I'm assuming is their abbreviation for aircraft.

So final update, left SFO around 4AM, which was roughly 4 hrs late. Dinner was served throughout the cabin after we landed in SFO. The pilot announced that we were going to take on additional fuel so that we could make up a bit of the lost time. Arrive in HK around 10AM. Total on the aircraft time is an estimated 18 hours.

I was on a B747 from LHR-HKG last September, and i heard a loud bang on the wing side during take-off, good thing we arrived HKG without incident. I think it is time to retire or sell those B747 which are almost 20years old now

jetsetter1k Dec 5, 2010 9:20 pm

Time to look at buying some of those 748's as replacements ! Has anyone been able to confirm the registration of the aircraft ?

toyotaboy95 Dec 6, 2010 2:56 am

A bit off topic but it's interesting how the message is really similar to that on one of the CX commercials (birthday party) where it shows Happy Birthday :), I thought it wasn't real.

Plus, it I presume the message was typed onboard rather than pre-set into the system? It says "You safety..." instead of "Your safety..."
