Luggage Allowance for U Class

Hello! Been around for a while but only second time to post a question. :)

Just redeemed a K Class to U Class round-trip HKG/LHR/HKG upgrade award on CX, and noticed from the U Class e-ticket (not the underlying K Class e-ticket which was cancelled) that luggage allowance will only be 20 Kg.

Remember clearly that U Class tickets used to come with 30 Kg of luggage allowance just like J, C, D and I Class tickets.

Any idea as to what might be going on?

Thanks.

You are definitely entitled to 30kg. I wouldn't worry...

Also redeemed the ticket in December 2009 and was entitled to 30 KG. You should not be worried.

This is what my e-ticket says (I hope the format comes out right):

X/O DEP/ AIRPORT-CITY DATE DAY TIME CARRIER& CLASS/ NOT NOT BAG
ARR FLIGHT/ BOOKING VALID VALID
AIRCRAFT STATUS BEFORE AFTER
--- ---- ----------------- ----- --- ---- -------- --------- ------ ----- ---

DEP HONG KONG INTL T1 XXFEB THU 1455 CX 253 BUSINESS-U XXFEB XXFEB 20K
ARR LONDON LHR T3 XXFEB THU 2010 (74A) CONFIRMED

BOOKING REFERENCE: XXXXX COUPON STATUS: OPEN FOR USE

DEP LONDON LHR T3 XXFEB MON 2050 CX 256 BUSINESS-U XXFEB XXFEB 20K
ARR HONG KONG INTL T1 XXFEB TUE 1710 (34B) CONFIRMED

BOOKING REFERENCE: XXXXX COUPON STATUS: OPEN FOR USE

Ironically, whilst I often travel with very little or no luggage, this is one occasion when I actually need every Kg of my luggage allowance.

Maybe you could ring MPO to see what's going on (and possibly ask for a new e-ticket)?

ahks Jan 27, 2010 7:38 pm

TheDell, if you are a Silver MPC member, you get an extra 10 kg baggage allowance on top of the normal 20 kg limit.

thats not the point, the upgrade J class ticket should have all the benefits of normal J class.

I'd call MPC and ask, if I had to guess the 20K is more of an IT problem than anything else, probably for upgrades it doesn't get updated properly, but the base allowance should definitely be 30K.

TheDell Jan 27, 2010 8:11 pm

I called the MPC as suggested by kchika and midlevels. I was told that the luggage allowance for business class should "definitely be 30 Kg" regardless of how the ticket was paid for (cash or asiamiles).

When I pointed out that my e-ticket said 20 Kg, the agent checked the e-ticket, spoke to his supervisor and came back and said the e-ticket was wrong. I asked, in which case, whether my e-ticket needed to be re-issued and the agent said the check-in staff would note that I am travelling business class and simply give me the usual 30 Kg luggage allowance (plus 10 Kg for being a Silver MPC Member).

I have since made enquiries with a friend who is also holding a U Class ticket and he says his e-ticket also says 20 Kg under luggage allowance. So it seems midlevels has got it spot on - it probably is an IT issue. (and those of us who frequent this forum all know about CX's IT issues).

I am not worried about the outbound trip but I hope there won't be problems with the check-in staff at LHR giving me "the usual 30 Kg luggage allowance". Anyway, I will report back if I encounter any difficulties.

Thank you all. :)

it's an IT issue definately dont worry. if your business class, u get biz class weight allowance (i've done both the USA route where i get the 2 x32 bags) and also the LHR route where i get the 30 kgs (plus what i'm entilled as a MPO).

Its a glitch but the check in staff know what your allowed based on your class....

christep Jan 27, 2010 8:29 pm

But just to be clear, since we're on the subject, an op-up just gets the luggage allowance from the class booked (plus MPC if applicable)? Yes?

TheDell Jan 27, 2010 8:49 pm

I believe so, christep. Strictly speaking, for an op-up, you get a better seat on board and nothing else. Any extra luggage allowance, priority luggage and lounge access etc should be based on the original class of travel and any MPC entitlement. So, technically, if you are a MPC Green Member and are offered an op-up from economy to business class, you should not get extra luggage allowance, priority luggage or lounge access. However, as I understand it, check-in staff sometimes overlook this "rule".

In the good old days, MPC used to offer extra luggage allowance coupons to members upon joining and renewal (10 Kg x 2 for Green [now Silver] Member, 10 Kg x 5 for Gold and Diamond Members). However, the system was abused, with some members selling their coupons at the airport for cash and, in some instances, fake coupons being tendered. MPC initially countered this by printing membership numbers and expiry dates on the coupons, but eventually decided to do away with these coupons altogether.

Out of interest, if you have a look at your online itinerary via your marco polo club, and download the e-ticket from there, does it say 20K or 30K?

TheDell Jan 27, 2010 11:27 pm

Both the e-tickets from my travel agent and downloaded from the CX Website say 20 Kg. I have also seen my friend's e-ticket and that also says 20 Kg.

Sounds like IT is slow to reflect all the possible situations, which is a norm in IT, and after watching CX's "upgraded" IT website and tools I'm not surprise.
