The identification code for upgrade on CX is printed in the boarding pass.
So, you could recognize which is "Operational Upgrade" or "Birthday Upgrade".
Please confirm the stub of the boarding pass.

ID-code is printed on on a right edge of boading pass.
I --- OP-UG
V --- Birthday UG
M --- Some special UG ??

Very Informative. Most of my up-op boarding pass have an I code to it. Some does not show any code at all

I've been fortunate to receive quite a few op-up and birthday ug's but have never noticed this. Will take another look next time.

Well I can confirm that the trip I took 2 days after my birthday did not get an upgrade, but the 2 trips I took a week before my birthday did get an upgrade, and an upcoming trip about 5 days after my birthday is currently slated for upgrade according to online checkin.

I asked CX agent before, and meaning is as follows,

I --- in-volountary UG (over booking, etc)
V --- Volountary UG (using asia miles, birthday, MPC 5/10th anniversary, etc)

Does anybody know what "M" stands for again? I most recently got one of those in June

I don't know whether ID-code is always printed in the boarding pass or not.

Please refer as follows,
(Sorry, written in chinese language)

http://blog.xuite.net/kib29163/kib29163/34796794

The owner of that blog is a Taiwanese, perhaps.
He traveled Japan from Taiwan via Hongkong just on his birthday.
That blog shows us a boarding pass printed in ID-code "V", at CX520(HKG-NRT) on 31 May.

According to his blog, he got Upgrade(Y->C) at the boarding gate in HK airport.
At that time, CX's staff said to him "Happy Birthday!"
So, I was sure that CX presented him "Birthday Upgrade".

To tell the truth, I got those information from TEPPEI's blog.
But, I hesitate to show the URL of his blog, because almost people can't understand what he writes in Japanese.

I'm starting to feel the same: maybe they are more willing to do it for DM and GO and not for SL. Although it could also be the J is full and there's no place to upgrade you to.

Also, I wonder how high of priority does these anniversary/birthday upgrades are? I mean if there's DM, GO on board and overbooked Y do they upgrade the DM/GO first or anniversary/birthday people first? My suspicion is DM/GO first (unless of course you're DM/GO AND having anniversary/birthday)

Don't give up, I got one as a SL for having been with MPO for 5 years. Tenth year is coming up :)

Also, in my experience:

I = Miles credited for original class
V = Miles credited for upgraded class in some cases (like on my 10th anniversary, I was upgraded and had Club Miles credited for the upgraded class)

What is "M" on the boarding card?

Posting here again to see if anyone knows...what is "M"? Does it stand for anything (I think "I" is for "involuntary," ie op-up)?

Lucky you! I was only given the miles for the original class of purchase (Y) for my anniversary upgrade a few days ago. Not that i'm complaining :)

Does anyone know if the birthday upgrade works for on an award ticket?
