AC sucking life from CP

I just tried to book a couple of trips from YVR to YXE and YWG. On eboth sets of flights, I could only get seating on flights with CP metal but with AC codeshare numbers. The CP numbers were not available for pricing. Is AC getting some of this revenue?

I also noted in the timetable that AC seemingly has all the good slots in the west. Between YVR and YYC, the split is pretty much even. From YYC to YYZ, of the 15 daily flights, only 3 are CP. From YVR to YEG, only 2 of 11 flights are CP. The return flights are similar. I could not find any routes where the tables were turned. Where has AC repoistioned the CP metal?

AC also maintained that they were not increasing fares. What they have done is reduced some of the late night flights where the fares aer lower, forcing passengers to fly earlier on the higher fares. They also removed our corporate discount with CP, without notice (according to the travel agent). We do a lot of business with the airlines and were able to negotiate a reasonable discount.

AC can not be allowed to flourish unchallenged. I hope that C3K, Roots, WestJet and the US airlines give AC a good fight.

I've noticed that, too, between YYZ and YWG. All the good flights are operated by AC. If you want to fly at 6 in the morning, then you can fly CP. Would also be interested to know where the CP planes are.

CP metal are picking up a lot more transborder flying, like YEG LAX, YYZ MCO, YYZ DTW, etc.

A fair bit has been reassigned in the East--for example all flights to YFC, YSJ and YQM are now either CP or QK.

Also some of the smaller East West routes are now CP, like YYZ YYJ and YUL YEG.

4 of the 767's had to be taken out to replace the DC-10's internationally. As well, CP has taken over routes like YVR TPE and YHZ LHR. There are fewer 767's available for trans-cons, which means that the available AC metal makes more sense, leaving the 737's and 320's on the smaller routes.

There are new leased aircraft coming into service. Just saw one that had the Air NewZealand logo removed Canadian logo up top, white fuselage with a grey belly and a green fin with the mapleleaf!

CP aircraft also do more YOW-YYZ now (of course they did none before, except the thrice-weekly YYZ-YOW-LHR flight). I noticed this when planning my aborted trip to Toronto yesterday.

But they've got what I would think are the low-demand flights, which will tend either to be lower loads, and/or cheaper fares (like the mid-week cheapo available 10am-2pm and 8pm+).

The list below isn't as lopsided as it seemed when I was scrolling through on Thursday, but it does seem that AC's got almost all the high-demand high-fare flights.

But then, CP was running newspaper ads positioning themselves vs. Royal ("cheap fares and preassigned seating!").

CP 6:30am F28
CP 6:45am 320
AC 7:00am 767
AC 7:30am 320
AC 8:00am 320
AC 8:30am 320
CP 9:00am 320
CP 9:15am 737
CP 10:00am 320
CP 11:00am 320
AC 12:00pm 767
CP 1:00pm 320
AC 2:00pm 320
CP 3:00pm 320
CP 4:00pm 763
AC 4:30pm D9S
AC 5:00pm 767
AC 6:00pm 767
AC 7:00pm 767
CP 8:00pm 320
AC 9:00pm 320
CP 10:00pm F28
AC 10:00pm 320

Looks as if most of the CP flights, except for the F28s, are all timed to get them into YYZ in time to turn around and become "prime time" flights onward to places like YVR, YYC and YEG -- which I believe is the case since they are now almost all 320s and 767s.

Good point, but it does mean AC gets the best shuttle slots. I guess someone has to. And CP gets 5 of the 9 eligible for the cheap mid-week fares.

But perhaps that really is intended to get CP's planes to Toronto in time for flights west.
