Thanks for all your suggestions and advice. It appears we are planning on staying at the Fairmont. The only question now is how many nights. Our trip begins in Montreal (YUL) next Tuesday where we will stay 1 night and then possibly stay in Quebec City Wed-Sat (3) nights. We plan on heading back to Montreal on Saturday and leave for home on Wed July 1st. Is this enough time in QC or should we spend more time in Montreal? What would you recommend for us to see in QC and/or Montreal?

Thanks again.

You have a reasonable split of time between YUL and YQB. There is plenty to do in either city to fill 3-4 days. In YQB, one of my favourites is the Citadelle (fortress). There are regular tours. In YUL, the old port (vieux port) and Vieux Montreal hold many treasures.

There are several older threads in this forum with lots of suggestions for both cities including some excellent restaurants.

Hi everyone! Planning a trip to Quebec city at the end of September - can anyone comment on whether the Hilton Quebec or Marriott Quebec City (former Courtyard) is a better option? (If it helps, I am Hilton Gold, and Marriott Plat).

Thanks kindly in advance! =)

I can't comment on the Courtyard but I did stay 2 nights at the Hilton Quebec in July and was very pleased...especially if you can score a high-floor room with the resultant view. And my HH Diamond status got me complimentary access to the Exec Lounge on the top floor (solid conti breakfast, and afternoon hors d'oeuvres)...not sure if HH Gold affords you the same privilege. Very convenient location immediately outside the walls of the Old City, across the street from the Parliament building. And if you don't expect to pull your car out more than once each day (and unless you have personal mobility issues, you will not need your car for touring the Old City, and you'll only need to pull out once on the day you go to Montmorency Falls), save yourself $9/day ($18/day vs $27/day) by opting for self-parking rather than the valet. Parking garage is directly below the property; unload your car at the front entrance when you arrive, decline the valet's offer to park it for you, and then the garage entrance is around the block and you ride the elevator up/down.

Thank you for the reply! I've read some reviews that indicate that HH Golds will not have access to the Exec Lounge, but overall it seems as if the Hilton is in a great location, I will cross my fingers and hope for a good upgrade to a high floor =)

Thanks for the parking information too - we haven't decided yet if we'll need a car, but definitely appreciate the tips to save money =)

As a data point, I am HHonors Gold and did get access to the lounge on my stay in 2012.

As mentioned, unless you have personal mobility issues, if your primary plan is to tour the Old City you will definitely NOT need a car...just comfortable walking shoes because you will be doing a lot of it. :)

As for other things to do, you also do not necessarily need a car to get to, and explore, Montmorency Falls (and trust me that you WILL want to visit that)...I don't know the bus line but I became aware that there definitely IS bus service to the Falls park. Another "thing to do" is the Quebec/Levis ferry...it's at the bottom of the Old City (again, foot-accessible) and very enjoyable esp. at sunset when you can get the very best view of the Chateau and Old City from the water. Bonus, when you get to Levis you can just either stay aboard for the ride back, or disembark and venture up the hill for the very best chocolate-dipped ice cream you've ever eaten, at Les Chocolats Favoris. Trust me on this one. (Check Trip Advisor or other 'Net searches for reviews of all of the above.)

(Update: Here's info on the bus option to Montmorency Falls: http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserR...ty_Quebec.html )

Thank you for the tips! As someone who has the biggest sweet tooth in the world, I'm REALLY looking forward to the chocolate dipped ice cream now! Hopefully it will still be nice and sunny by the end of September =)

I think we've decided on not renting the car - we're spending most of our time exploring the old town anyways and it seems like it wouldn't be terribly difficult to visit Montmorency Falls via transit.
