I only got 2 tickets in the initial lottery but got all the rest of the tickets I wanted, including the opening ceremony in the June sales opportunity. No scam. The medal ceremonies were a good value at $22 including a concert but I would have liked people to have the chance to see medal presentations for free. The Olympic experience was totally amazing and VANOC did a great job. While I had my snowboardcross ticket cancelled due to unsafe conditions I decided to head to the departure hub anyways and one of the staffers there offered to put me on a bus to Whistler for free instead and I bought cheaper tickets for cross-country skiing and will have the money refunded from the other tickets. Those good news stories don't make the news. Transit was also amazing moving thousands of people with trains running as close as 30 seconds apart!! Greyhound to Whistler had tonnes of buses running and all was on time. Well done Vancouver/Whistler and VANOC :-:
Even Greyhound last night was great, with a very friendly driver. The Canadians in Whistler were all, without exception, incredibly helpful and friendly. Most in Vancouver over the past day have been great but two Canadians here in Vancouver made very snide remarks to me as I was using public transit about the US. It was started by them observing my USA jacket. But a couple of bad apples don't paint an accurate picture. Just unfortunate that those clowns even open their mouths and show how ignorant they in fact are! Two more bobsledding events to go, meaning two day trips to Whistler. Hopefully I will get (free) tickets to the Whistler victory ceremony on Saturday. John |
Beware - Olympic Ticket Scam
Someone has determined how to turn a stolen credit card into a significant amount of cash quickly. Read on to see how .....
I bought a single to a very popular Olympic hockey game and then found out I could not go. I posted the ticket to sell and it did. Thinking everything was fine I carried on but two days later the ticket was "back" in my account. There was no e-mail in my e-mail account or any other notice. Thinking the site had made a mistake I phoned in to the ticketing agency and asked some questions. They asked if I had received an e-mail saying the ticket was sold. Replying"Yes" the rep said my ticket had been sold to someone using a stolen credit card, thus the return to my account. The issue is someone is walking around Vancouver with a ticket they will undoubtly sell. The bar code won't work and the purchaser will be out of pocket with no recourse. So, another reason to not buy a ticket on the street. Go Canada Go! CanuckOnFire |

Well, personally I think the whole Vancouver 2010 Games Ticket Request was a scam. I put in for the following tickets;
CL001 - City Locals OEP 1 (ZO001 - Opening Ceremony) (IH016 - Ice Hockey) (SB004 - Snowboard) (CU013 - Curling) (VC007 - Vancouver Victory Ceremony) (IH036 - Ice Hockey) C0024 - City OEP 24 (SB006 - Snowboard) (IH050 - Ice Hockey) (ZC001 - Closing Ceremony) ZO001 - Opening Ceremony IH047 - Ice Hockey IH048 - Ice Hockey IH049 - Ice Hockey IH050 - Ice Hockey ZC001 - Closing Ceremony Out of all of these tickets that I requested, I got ABSOLUTELY NONE OF THEM. That's right, not a single ticket. I guess you had to live in Vancouver to actually get picked to get any tickets. Oh well. With all the other scams that Vancouver has been doing to it's residents, I can easily see how and why this scam so easily went through. I will not be buying any post sales tickets at all. There's no way I would buy any tickets above the original face value. I might offer about $2-3 bucks per ticket, for Men's Gold Medal Hockey. It's funny now how so many tickets that were reserved are coming available for sale. I guess they royally screwed up with the Ticket Request scam. They obviously over anticipated WAY too much. Then the economy busted. Also, you have to pay for medal ceremonies every night? Wow! I remember at Calgary's 1988 Olympics it was completely free of charge. Well, good for you again Vancouver. Slip another one past all the suckers coming to your town! As for Visa, I cancelled mine. I'll never use them again. Official credit card for the Olympics? If you're so narrow minded that you ensure you negate half of the population from even being able to purchase from your product, then you deserve what you get. Good for Vancouver, your public is now being dumped with an estimated 2.5 billion debt (will end up being way under estimated). That doesn't even take into consideration how much more it will cost to host the Paralympic Games right afterward. On the bright side, this will probably burst the Vancouver housing price bubble. Especially when the real estate taxes jump 20-30% to pay all this off. Also, the HST will end up being broader covering many more items than what the GST + PST used to cover. Time to get out of Vancouver = Right now! Vancouver should be happy you're not going with that attitude. |
is it possible to buy hockey tickets in front of arena before match? I'm thinking of the final game... thx in advance

If you're concerned about ticket validity (and you should be), there appear to be a number of ticket brokers with offices near Canada Hockey place, and I'd imagine one of them would be a much safer option. This is assuming you can't use the official ticket resale website, where validity is guaranteed. |
See Above
Possible yes, advisable - NO. See my post above. When I called the ticketing agency they said they had a rash of tickets bought with stolen credits cards. Nice way to change a stolen credit card into something marketable.

http://showtimetickets.ca/ Update: BTW, I would phone them or go into their storefront as opposed to depending on their website. Their inventory of tickets is likely both extremely fluid and extremely expensive right now... |
Can't wait for the game!!!!!

Well .....
Wahhhhhhhhh! They're over. The circus has left town and it was sooooooooo much fun.
(I didn't get to experience the lady acrobats pouring good Russian vodka into the mouths of guests at Sochi house as they hung from the ceiling though! (Darn!) My cube mate did though (well, into his glass, he doesn't drink much.) It was fun. ..... CanuckOnFire |

CanuckOnFire I'm actually thinking of going to that Olympics, both for the novelty value and the fact that ticket prices should be reasonable. I can foresee an accomodations problem, however. There are only a couple of "Western" hotels in Sochi and, even in "normal" times, they're very expensive. Obviously, the Olympic committee will snag all the rooms, so I'm guessing I'd have to do some sort of homestay. It would certainly be interesting. |

The alpine sports are also going to be located some 30 Km away because it's so warm (palms are grown in Sochi, and people do grow that and bananas in Vancouver). Seen the weather there for the past few weeks? Sochi is at the same latitude as Rome and warmed by a big body of water. I was reading something about Sochi possibly being in a war zone too. Close to Georgia where there's a bit of unfinished business and also not too far away from Chechnya. http://www.vancouversun.com/news/201...818/story.html |

Sochi will be a challenge in more ways than one.
I'll have to read more about it. I didn't think there was any real conflict in Sochi. I kind of thought it was a bit like Turkey: a bad neighborhood, but generally safe. Obviously, one would expect security in Russia to be very tight, if not oppresive. Heck, at the Beijing Olympics, where the terrorist threat was pretty modest, the sites were protected like in a war zone. I was in Moscow last year a week before the Eurovision song contest and you would have thought the president was staying in my hotel. The weather DOES seem like an unsolvable problem, though. Not sure why you'd give the winter olympics to a place that's not particularly "wintery." |

I spent but a brief 2 days in YVR and watched the rest on CTV. Still feeling a bit sad that it's all done now. It will be decades before we get to experience the Olympics here in Canada again. Hats off to VANOC - there was tragedy and a few glitches but in the end they pulled off a great Olympics! |
