4x4 requied for Whistler in Jan?

I'm off to Whistler in Jan.
I've always traditionally hired a 4x4 for Us/Canada ski trips, but never once have required their capabilities.
Do I really need a 4x4? I know that Whistler is a low village and the road is busy so I would expect it to be cleared.
What is the likelyhood of getting "snowed in"?

Car with snow tires and decent traction is all you need for Whistler. So don't rent a Porsche with summer tires on it and you'll be fine.

Agree. I've been going for many years (sometimes in a small pickup with less than optimal tires) and I've never had a problem.

Unless you're staying at a house/b&b/etc well outside the village area, you should have no problem.

You never need a 4x4 if you are on normal roads. These are maintained for ordinary vehicles. If you are going off-road for some reason then you need a 4x4. On the other hand, if you want a car with all-wheel drive because you think you get better control - that's fine - until you try to stop - no advantage. But it's warm along the water and all season tires do best when there's no snow.

Thanks everyone. Just as I thought.
Problem is I'm coming into SEA and the choice of cars isn't great. Sedan, sedan, sedan...
Unlike Europe stationwagons aren't common :(
Looks like I'll be hiring a 4x4 just to get the space to transport my gear...

But when it does snow, a 4x4 will get you to the scene of your accident quicker ;) .

Shouldn't be a problem, but just be sure the rental car company is aware you're driving the car into Canada.
