Newfoundland, off the beaten track

I am in Corner Brook, Newfoundland. I'm spending 14-20 days roaming around the island. My trip will take me through Gros Morne, up to St. Stephen, and through towns (i.e. Gander, Clarenville, Glovertown, and the ST. John's area).

I am searching for specific destinations (known or unknown). I know about Terra Nova, Lanse aux Meadows ,and I've heard about Twiningate and Trinit. Please share your favourite Newfoundland spots in the month of AUgust according to the following interest criteria. Thanks.


-the nicest thing to do?
-memorable/dramatic scenary & landscape photography (i.e. viewpoints, panoramas, sunsets)
-nature, the outdoors, hikes/hilltops, and amazing views...
-lovely/charming streets
-architecture
-non-typical/exciting/interesting/unique EXPERIENCES (full of original character), and local only to the area.
-specialty/unique local cuisine

Despite the many moose on the island, I saw none on my 10-day visit in Sept. 2002.

Apparently the best way to see one is to drive really fast at night on the roads.

I also took the ferry over to Labrador, and visited the Red Bay National Historic Site, where vessels of Basque fisherman have been restored from the 1500s.

When you make it to the east of the island, I can definitely recommend the Bonavista peninsula, where you'll find NL at its most original. The area around Trinity East is especially nice, as is the town of Bonavista. There you'll hear people speak, and you'll think you're somewhere in the UK/Ireland.
