Sorry, but VIA does run much faster than 100kmh (60mph) in the corridor (and that includes Ontario) Trains using the LRC & Renaissance equipment routinely reach speeds of 95 to 100 MPH. One stretch of 100 MPH running is where the tracks run parallel to Autoroute 20 west of Charny. Even The Canadian using the older cars will do 85 MPH across the prairies. Same for the Ocean: 85 MPH on some stretches between Charny and Riviere du Loup.
(BTW: Railways still use MPH in Canada) |
VIA 1 Upgrade?
Are there any promos or ways to get an upgrade to VIA 1? I need to get my mom from TO to Quebec City to meet up with me on Dec 19th. We will fly Porter back to TO so its just one way. Any hints appreciated.

As far as I can tell there's no such thing as an "upgrade", the only way to get VIA1 is to buy it. Now there are frequently sales and promos on VIA1 fares but not usually during a peak period as late December. Seriously just cough up the cash, it's not that much and it's well worth it.

You are likely correct that it is worth it and it will likely be booked as VIA1 but I have seen promos of various sorts so if they are around.... |
Free upgrade to VIA 1 coupon
I received an email a while back about a free upgrade to via 1.
Maybe someone can use this promo. http://www.viarail.ca/fairmont/en_conditions.html You may use it between July 1 and August 31, 2008 (inclusive) , from Thursday to Sunday only, for two one-way or two round trips on any train where VIA 1 class is available (southern Ontario and southern Québec). |
If you have Air Miles, you may redeem 175 miles for a $25 Via gift card or 700 miles for $100.

There is a stretch where the express train may reach 103 mph. This was according to the Via1 attendant when asked by my son.
A very enjoyable way to travel Toronto-Montreal and back. |
