Montreal Romantic Hotels

I am trying to zero in on the best hotel for a romantic weekend in Montreal. Right now I have zeored in on the folllwing.

L’Hôtel de la Montagne (Has a pool, 175$/Night)
Nelligan (No Pool, 215$/Night)
Gault (No Pool, 235$/Night)
Loews - Hotel Vogue (No Pool, 275$/Night)
W Montrial (No Pool, 275$/Night)
Le St-James(No pool, 350$/night)

Dont know why most of these hotels dont have a pool. I here a lot about Gault as its a small and better version of W. Mixed views on Loews

Not a bad list. The St James is in the heart of Old Montreal. It's where U2, Mick and the boys, all the big names stay. Hence the prices. I'd put it at close to the top on the "romantic list".

The W is more avant guard...a boutique hotel with a very modern flare. Very young, chic clientele. People either like it or they don't. Location is on Square Victoria, in the heart of the business district, midway between Old Montreal and downtown.

Hotel de la Montagne <chuckle>. Very nice hotel in the heart of downtown. The reason I chuckle is that seemingly all the middle age singles in Montreal tend to congregate there on Thursday night. A bit scary for us younger generation. BTW, the pool is on the roof of the hotel and is open to the public. Also, there is also an underground passageway which takes you to the hotel's club and restaurant (Thursday's...ate there last week) on neighbouring Crescent street. Steer clear of the club on Thursday nights

Have heard very favourable reviews about the Nelligan but have never been...I was thinking it was in the same league as St James but the price suggest it is a but lower. Old Montreal is very romantic...and also crazy busy during the summer months...

Honestly don't know anything about Loews or Gault. I would recommend checking them out on Tripadvisors. I use it all the time for travel in Europe and have yet to be disappointed...be sure to guage the hotel best on the collective consensus of guests...don't let one bad review influence your decision (you'll be sleeping in the streets if you do).

You could also consider the Auberge du Vieux Port. We had our wedding there last year and it was great. They also have lofts that are actually a better value than the rooms and give you a fair bit (or a lot) more space than a standard hotel room. They don't have a pool though, and bring some ear plugs. Old Montreal is very noisy at night in the summer on a weekend.

The Gault is more a design study than a romantic hotel (think elements like unpainted concrete walls, stainless steel chairs, etc.). Every room is different and the hotel has a great restaurant in the building. St. James opened at about the same time, and went much more traditional luxury (and has been more successful). Most romantic would be http://www.pierreducalvet.ca/ (with country french furnishings including antiques and 4 poster beds).

Have not stayed at Gault or St. James but I love Hotel Nelligan. Historical building in Old Montreal with exposed brickwork, lot of charm, great bed and some jr. suite has jacuzzi bath for 2 ;)

Comlementary continental breakfast with excellent croissants and wine and cheeze in the evenings. For the minibar, you can get 200ml bottles of gin/vodka/etc. for more or less regular prices so could save you some bar prices if you drink. Same management as Places des Armes and Auberge du vieux port.

I agree with the Nelligan. Great little hotel right in Old Montreal. Go for the suite with Jacuzzi, you wont be disappointed.

With regards to pools, most of the hotels on your list are in old historical buildings...
