Vancouver hotels
 

Just purchased a heavily discounted rt ticket to Vancouver and am trying to devise cheap, but still excellent, accomodations there in the heart of the nightclub district (wherever that happens to be-- I dont know). If anyone has any ideas or advice, I'd be extremely grateful.

The Westin Grand is walking distance to Yaletown - the nightclub/restaurant part of town. I think it's probably close to the top in terms of hotels - and most if not all rooms are suites...floor to ceiling windows with great views of the city and surrounding mountains. There's a boutique hotel in the middle of Yaletown called the Opus - which I've never stayed at. I had indifferent service in the hotel's restaurant, so don't have an interest in staying at the hotel.

What's your price range? What time of the year are you traveling?

Downtown Vancouver is relatively small and you can easilly reach most anything from the major hotels. Give us some answers to francophile's Q's and maybe we can help some more.

And for what its worth, don't forget the Wedgewood Hotel.

If you've visited the Mileage Run forum since New Year's you can probably guess where I got the tickets (aircanada.com, Jan. 1, 2006, 3:30 am, EST).

I suppose I'll probably make use of my tickets either next weekend or in early February. My price range is basically as low as possible. (Less than 70 USD would be awesome.) I'm not trying to impress anyone... I'd rather spend money on food, drink and entertainment than on a fancy hotel suite. Proximity to the downtown is important, however. I don't want to say near the airport.....

Any other ideas for a first-time Vancouver visitor would be appreciated!!!

I don't know of any cheap places under US$100 in YVR. The reason why I asked when you were travelling was because my favorite hotel in YVR has quite affordable rates during the winter time:

Anyway, enjoy YVR. This is one of the most beautiful cities in N. America.

For the most part the offerings are from Vancouver's european/American/Pacific Northwest style spots. Though I think the Asian eateries are the real gems in Vancouver's culinary firmament some of the pacific NW fare is still well worth your time and money--and in this case not much of that even.

We stayed at the Westin Grand Vancouver. Definitely not below USD 100.

Otoh we also considered the Hampton Inn on Robson street. Friends were staying there. Winter rates were quite low. definitely under USD 100. Good clean rooms. IIRC, two suites per floor, rest all with two Queens. The breakfast buffet was standard fare but sufficient quantity. HI is at the beginning of Robson St and you will need to walk a few blocks to Yaletown.

Opus
 

If you want to stay right in Yaletown in one of the cutting edge boutique hotels for around $375 Cdn/night The Opus is right on Davie Street in the heart of the district.

Try out The Sylvia for something completely different (old but with character) right on English Bay near Stanley Park and about a 20 minute walk to Yaletown. You can stay there for around $100 Cdn/night but you have to book well in advance because it's usually full on weekends.

P.S. One of the 'hottest' clubs is a restaurant/bar called Glowbal. The food was excellent.

I was also going to recommend the Sylvia -- it's a bit creaky, but it has the best location in Vancouver and is an easy walk along the water to Yaletown. Single rooms often open up at the last minute, so keep trying.

An alternative to the Sylvia is the Buchan Hotel a few blocks away. It's further away from Yaletown, but as someone else said, nothing in downtown Vancouver is that far away from anything else. It's priced a bit cheaper than the Sylvia, too -- as low as $45 CDN if you're willing to share a bath (and go in low season, which this still is.) http://www.buchanhotel.com/

One advantage to both hotels is they tend to attract a fair amount of young Europeans -- so you might have some company on that walk to and fro the nightclubs.

I am going to Vancouver this weekend I got the Coast Hotel on priceline for $45 USD 1bdrm suite in West Vancouver I have stayed at this place before and it OK try Priceline I always have good luck using them for trips to Vancouver and Portland

Just don't stay anywhere near Hastings and Main (or east of there).....

I absolutely love the Fairmont Vancouver Airport.....but you want downtown....and when my ex-girlfriend lived in Vancouver we stayed in here apt. off of False Creek, so I can't help you there....

But seriously, unless you are an IV Drug user, stay away from Hastings and Main and points east (at least until you get to Burnaby!).

Congrats on getting the AC ticket! If you don't mind less prestigious names, try:

1. Blue Horizon Hotel on Robson Street (many shops & cafes nearby)
2. Burrard Motor Inn (conveniently located on Burrard St, across from Sheraton Wall Center)
3. Holiday Inn on Davis St (less than 5 minutes walk to Yaletown)
4. Days Inn downtown (in the center of the business district and shopping area)

There are lots of good Japanese restaurants in downtown Vancouver. Enjoy!
