YVR Transit
Is BC Transit still on strike?
|
Yes. This means no city buses but Skytrain is operating and taxis are a little busier than usual. Traffic is a little worse as well (if possible).

Come now Dorian, compare this city in the midst of a 100+ day bus strike with a normal day in Toronto.
Maybe it's just that 8 years in HK and NYC have made me more traffic-tolerant, but I am pleasantly suprised at how well traffic is moving here. |
Sorry...it is certainly worse now. Maybe you don't get out on 99 and 1 very much?
Dorian |
Sure, it is worse--but compare our current situation with any day on the 401.
Give me Hwy 1 with a Lion's Gate Closure during a bus strike over the Gardiner at 4:30 on a Friday anytime. |
Well...it just took me 37 minutes to go from W. Georgia and Burrard to the other side of the Burrard St. bridge (about 2 km for those not in the know)...it was rush hour.
I'd take the 401 and Ontario drivers any day of the week...even with 50% of the lanes closed. Vancouver drivers are some of the worst drivers of any modern city. Dorian |
Actually, I will grant you, yesterday was pretty tough on the Burrard bridge.
But I left Burrard and Hastings at 1825, and I was home in Kits by 1900. 35 minutes to go 4.5 km, I grant you, but I have endured much worse. |
I just read on another site that the strike has finally been settled and as of tomorrow 8/7 everything will be back to normal. The good people of Vancouver will also be able to travel free on transit from 8/7-8/9.
I think that they should have made it 1 free day for every day the strike inconvenienced people. [This message has been edited by Leisuremiles (edited 08-06-2001).] |
One small correction. The drivers have been legislated back to work, subject to the previous collective agreement.
The legislation provides the bargaining unit and management with a time frame within which to resolve the outstanding issues of part-time drivers and contracting out. Failing this, the matter will go back to mediation, and if that is unsuccessful, to arbitration. |
I'd say that's a pretty big correction, the piece I read was spinning it as a settlement and that all would now be well, lets hope for all of your sakes this is soon the case.
