We rented last month - easy peasy. Though we returned the car and then wanted to head to Vancouver (we had driven/taken ferry to Vancouver Island but didn't want or need it for the remaining 3 days of our trip) it was a little complicated to figure out how to get to the taxis (rather, it took us a little bit to find the right signage to direct us there, since we were doing something different from the norm)

Car rentals at YVR are super easy, check in and returns have their own section of the airport dedicated to it. You do pay a premium for airport rentals though, and it is not fun if they run out of cars and you get stuck at kiosk waiting. There really isnt much seating around.

Like others have said, the rental situation in YVR is excellent, close, and convenient. While you will pay for the ease of use, I would strongly recommend you stick to the airport rental rather than messing around in the city trying to find a rental car program as uber/taxi rides quickly add up to the daily rate of renting a car here!

Price wise I highly recommend checking out Turo - some drivers will deliver the car right to the terminal; otherwise you can find vehicles that are very close to the SkyTrain, which connects directly to the terminal. Oh yeah, and the SkyTrain is pretty great for getting around the city, there's perhaps a chance you don't need a car at all. Can just tap your credit card on the faregates to pay for transit.
