Looking to fly to calagary next summer but finding the cost very high. Preference would be Air Canada direct but currently around £1200 each for my dates. Have seen the Air Transat with a 4 hour stop at around £800 each but not sure the kids will cope with stopping that long. Also looked at KLM via Amsterdam. Can anyone suggest anything else I may not have considered yet? Thanks

Look into WestJet - they fly direct to Calgary from both Heathrow and Gatwick

Second WestJet. Their 787s are very new, and the Economy cabin is as nice, if not nicer than AC's in my estimation.

We flew to LHR this May for something like CAD300 one-way. They often have prices in that range, or lower, although they can go significantly higher in summer proper. Looking right now, you can have a round trip from LGW to Calgary in June and returning June or July for around CAD800, or less on certain dates. Flying out of LHR is slightly more. Leaving in July is quite a bit more, and they don't seem to have anything for August yet.

It may be that you are looking too early. Give it a couple more months, and monitor WestJet's site for sales.

For the highest peak seasons, it is never best to book far in advance - your best times are between 45-100 days before day of flight. The reason is that for the highest peak times, the lowest prices are typically blocked to push determined travelers into higher price points. Then, when they have to fill the plane, they reduce the price. So - if you are buying non-refundable - generally never really great to book more than 6 months ahead for the most peak dates.

I imagine the reason you are seeing higher fares is because neither AC nor WS are posting their best fares. Hence the advice not to book to far in advance.
I want to nuance the advice favouring WS over AC. This is good advice, if:
- you live near LGW;
- you don't care if you collect Star Alliance points.
My understanding is both WS and AC fly 787 non stop ? If so, you can't say WS is better then AC ?
