Does anyone know if T1 international security is open yet or is still all through domestic, with the associated long walk to the gates?

I posted this information in the thread about arrivals at YYZ, but it seems relevant here as well. Pearson Airport announced today that as of June 20 non-ticketed individuals will once again be able to enter the terminal to help and bid farewell to passengers.

Another DP from my trip to NYC - AC flight to EWR last Saturday at 9 am (originally delayed to 9:50 am, further delayed to 11 am due to late inbound), arrived at the airport T1 at around 6 am and it was already a zoo. The 'friendly' AC agent told me to wait in the Lounge 15 area (you can only line up 2 hours prior to departure). Ended up sneaking in the line at 6:40 am and it took about 2.5 hours to clear security (40 minutes) + US customs (remainder). Not sure if the CATSA people are new (thus more conservative), but there are a lot more bags being selected for secondary during security screening, to the point where the machines are backed-up and at a standstill.

(For those that are holding US passports, there is a separate line against the right wall in the customs hall where you can bypass the 'main customs line' - YMMV)

Seems most weekdays around 2:00 P.M., T3 seems to have good lines at the B/C and C security areas (based on CATSA wait times). Anyone who's reading this care to share their experiences around that time?

I have noticed this too, and it has affected what and how I pack my carryon bags.

Even though security wasn't overly busy at the time, this was our experience in T1 on a recent domestic flight. Almost every person was "selected" for a secondary of some type. Meanwhile the bag belt backed up, with staff shouting "whose laptop is this" and similar. There were a ton of checkers on duty - probably outnumbering the passengers, but this process introduced a delay of about 20 minutes when none was necessary.

June 27, mid day just before 2pm, terminal 3 "the west jet one":

Zero lineup at security but long waits at most airlines.

We lined up with KLM/Air France to have our boarding passes reprinted to show priority security (we were connecting from Edmonton on AC and the tickets they printed for us only indicated priority security and lounge access at the first airport, unsure if this would cause issues, we requested new boarding passes printed on KLM cardstock)

But we probably wasted more time with that than just going through security, priority or not.

However, I would like to point out that any problems Pearson has are entirely of their own causing: there is no way to connect between terminals on the airside. We arrived on AC (terminal 1) and are departing on KLM (terminal 3), and had to exit the secure area, take a train, and then go through security all over again for no good reason other they haven't figured out how to build an airside pedway. It doubles or triples the amount of work security is doing.

Compare this to other airports where it you're connecting and have already cleared security somewhere else, there will be a train, bus, or tunnel for you to move between terminals and gates without leaving the secured zone.

Heck in Calgary you can even clear customs without needing to re-clear security or re-check your bags.

Pearson is just incredibly badly designed, in spite of all the landing and improvement fees it collects.

I disagree. There are 3 separate sections within each terminal, each with their own gates and security. Domestic. Transborder (USA) and International. Airside connections would be difficult with 3 separate sections.

Many airports do it with an airside bus. Not rocket science.

YYZ is still stuck in the 70s. We visit regularly and the same escalators/moving sidewalks have been broken for years. And this was pre-covid. It is rocket science.

It varies so much from day to day, and certainly none of us can predict what it will be like a month from now. But I expect by then you won’t have a ton to worry about with priority access.
