Toll roads in Ontario

Hello,

We'll be driving from US to Toronto, and next day we are going to drive to Ottawa for few days.
When I'm using google maps it tells me that the road between Toronto and Ottawa is partially toll road, and when doing more research it says that it has automated license plate reader. I'll be driving in a rental car. How will that work? Am I going to be hit with the 'penalty' from my rental car place for having unpaid tolls?
There are no booths to pay the tolls in Canada?

Thank you

The 401 which runs between Toronto and Ottawa (or close to Ottawa, at least) is a free highway. The 407 is a toll road that runs across the top of Toronto, but is easily avoided. It’s pretty expensive, so unless it’s going to save you a lot of time, it’s usually best to avoid it. There are no booths—they take a picture of the plate and then mail out a bill.

If you take the 407, you will get a charge from the rental company, and probably a little extra surcharge for their bother.

Within Google Maps you can set it to avoid toll roads. Do that and it won’t lead you to the 407.

I used my personal car with US plates to travel extensively on Hwy 407 last year. The bill was extremely high. They mailed me bills for many months with compounding interest and I just ignored them. With a rental car or your own personal Cdn car you will have to pay the bill.

Don't be too surprised if they send an American collection agency after you.

bwiadca, if you do decide to take the toll roads, my experience with renting cars in Ontario is the rental car companies all have the set up for electronic processing. I can't find any past receipts in my e-mail (I remember getting a paper copy mailed to me last August), but I seem to recall the rental company charging around $7.50 a day on days the toll roads were used, on top of the tolls themselves. It cost me $48 on that trip last August, and I think that was about $30 of tolls and $15 of fees.
