Rapid testing imminent

https://calgaryherald.com/news/natio...5-2bc10609eb22

"The federal government will replace mandatory 14-day quarantines with rapid COVID-19 tests for international air passengers, the Sun has learned."

Finally some positive travel news! The devil is in the details and there are many details to come out about the airport testing procedures however it looks very promising as the mandatory quarantine was a travel killer for Canadians.

Very excited, providing it won't cost $250 / test like what UA is doing at SFO for the Color rapid tests for Hawaii-bound travelers..

Cheaper than two weeks off work for me.

YYC only. Nov.2. Must be much easier to implement in a secondary airport.
Hope it works out and is expanded soon.

A much needed step in the right direction.

"Kenney said if the traveller pilot project goes well, it will be expanded to the airport in Edmonton early in the new year."

Hold the excitement guys. This might take a while to roll out to the whole country.

Sounds like it isn't rapid testing after all - just the chance to do PCR directly on arrival. Still a very positive step forward!

YYC get how many intl flights now per day? Any of them not from the US?

Regardless it is a good start.

I believe just DEN/DFW/MSP, one or two frequencies each at most.

What about WS's LGW-YYC? Also KL is still flying from AMS I think. I haven't checked Mexico / Caribbean but WS should also be flying there again now.

The feds don't seem to want rapid testing for some reason. Hopefully the provinces can put the pressure on. But just a million rapid tests for Ontario? How long will that last?

PointsPanda Oct 22, 2020 10:06 pm

fantastic news

I believe you have it backwards. The Feds are in favour of rapid testing, but the provinces are resisting because they are afraid of travel-related covid cases in the community.
