Calgary

What streets/spots do you recommend as the main streets to see on Calgary? Also, what night venues/clubs, restaurants, and rooftop view do you recommend?

I live here.

Basically you have the downtown walking strip called Stephen Ave Mall.....which is actually 8th Ave SW on the map. Bars, restaurants, and shopping, in a cool urban vibe. Great at lunchtime for people watching, as the office towers usually empty out between 11-2pm for the break. It's a business crowd and can be dead at night. Price $$ - $$$$

Walking down 4th St SW starting at 10 Ave SW over to 26 Ave SW is pretty much lower end bars and restaurants with a few pricier places thrown in. A middle aged to younger crowd. Price $ - $$$$

Westbound along 17 Ave SW from 4th St SW over to 14 St SW is the noisy and much younger aged section full of bars and fast/street food type restaurants. Price $ - $$$

Hope that helps. If you are staying in a hotel you should ask about it here, and you'll get a few answers. We have a bunch of members from YYC I think.

Agree with the comments above as a fellow YYC based member. A couple other nice walkable neighbourhoods across the river from Downtown are Kensington and Bridgeland. The East Village, towards the east of downtown is a nice stop between downtown and Bridgeland as well, with Charbar being a focal point. The downtown core (Stephen Ave) tends to be more business travelers in the evenings, so the locals migrate across the train tracks to the Beltline area (between 10 Ave and 17 Ave, or along 4 ST as noted above).

As far as rooftop views, the Calgary Tower is the most popular, but is a bit of a tourist trap. National on Stephen Ave has a rooftop patio that's fairly popular, but more of a mid-rise building so nothing spectacular. Lots of great patios along 17 Ave, with the Ship & Anchor being one of the ones in the middle (younger crowd). For nightclubs, there's a pretty wide variety and lots of opinions, so may want to narrow down what type of vibe you're looking for. Many of these tend to be along 10 Ave, with the Hifi Club, Commonwealth, and others being popular. National on 10th and Craft are also popular in the evenings, but more of a beer-hall type setup than nightclub. Twisted for LGBT bar or drag shows.

There's a great pathway system to explore along the river as well as the neighbourhoods, and the Lime/Bird scooters are a fun way to get around throughout the city too.
