Flying KIX=>YVR=>YUL: Do I Have To Offload Bags At YVR?

My 17-year-old son is flying Air Canada from Osaka to Vancouver to Montreal. I was just wondering, as I've flown that route many times before, if he will have to take all his bags off when he arrives in Vancouver? If I remember correctly, not only did I have to go collect my bags somewhere but then I had to re-check them in in some out-of-the-way gulag and then walk a mile to catch my connecting flight to Montreal.

Is this still the procedure? He is travelling this coming Tuesday the 23rd and I need to warn him what to expect when he lands in Vancouver. The poor boy was going the opposite direction once a couple of years ago and he got off in Vancouver expecting to pick up his bags. Of course he didn't have to, so he couldn't find them and he missed his only flight to Osaka and had to be rescued by a woman who took him home for the night and brought him back the next day.

I don't want him to go through that again!

Many thanks in advance

Nick

As per Air Canada's website, flights connecting in Vancouver that arrive from Japan do not require baggage collection (assuming all flight sequences are through Air Canada). The link even has a map telling you where to go:

https://www.aircanada.com/us/en/aco/...rt/int-ca.html

Connecting through Vancouver – From an International Flight to Canada

Follow the "Arrivals" signs to Canada Customs and Immigration.

Have all documentation in hand and ensure all applicable forms have been completed.

https://www.aircanada.com/content/da...urity-icon.gifProceed to Primary Inspection Kiosks (PIK) and clear Canada Customs.

https://www.aircanada.com/content/da...ggage-icon.gifFlights from Australia, Europe or Japan: You do not need to claim your checked baggage.
All other flights: Claim checked baggage at the carousel and proceed to the Canada Connections corridor to the right of carousels. You will arrive in Pier C.

So it seems like he shouldn't need to collect his bags, and he should check them in Osaka and receive them in Montreal. He can also double check whenever he's checking in at Osaka and ask the staff to confirm that he won't need to collect his bags in Vancouver.

Wow! Thanks! I called Air Canada yesterday and they seemed completely clueless. He offered me an unaccompanied minor meet 'n' greet option for $100 and then withdrew it. "I guess it's only for non-stop flights."

Hmm. Why would I need a meet and greet if I were meeting him at the end of his non-stop trip?

But anyway . . . too bad I can't get someone to escort him from gate to gate but we'll have to make do. I'll copy and paste the transfer instructions and we'll just find out how he fares!

Cheers!

Nick

17 is a pretty good age to ditch the escort and have him figure things out on his own :)
