There is a similar article on CBC as well, with comment section open, so :D I would like to find the video to the conference or the actual report, but haven't had any luck yet. But as an armchair expert, I would say that many airports have parallel runways next to each other and operates in the ways similar to YYZ (outer RWY for landing, inner RWY for take off), on top of my mind I can think of EWR, SFO, LAX, SHA, CTS, IST, etc. Not sure if the report suggesting parallel runways in general are unsafe or there is something special at YYZ. |

The taxiway layout between the runways has several characteristics that are uncommon compared to those at other airports, both within North America and internationally. The runways are spaced a relatively short distance (305 m [1000 feet]) apart, and the rapid exit taxiways (RETs) provide direct access to the adjacent runway without first progressing to another transitional surface. The runway holding positions are located immediately following a 65° curve and are situated at greater distances from the protected inner runway than they are at other airports. Looking at LAX, its south parallels have a taxiway in between them. The north parallels do not, but the high-speed exits do not have YYZ's 65° curves that the report notes. EWR has a taxiway in between its parallels. SEA has a taxiway in between outer and middle parallels; not between the middle & inner, but also doesn't have funky curves in the high-speed exits. (I assume one can find other airports with similar risks as YYZ, but that's just a couple of examples showing how some other airports may have reduced risks.) |
