We just got back, really enjoyed Monarque, Restaurant BIS, and Le Pois Penche. Breakfast at Bar George was good along with Breakfast at Pub Burgandy Lion (went to watch premier league on Sat morning).

miamiflyer8 La Banquise has the best poutine in town, and Schwartz's is the place to go for smoked meat. If you're looking for something nicer and can snag a reservation (you should start looking now), Au Pied de Cochon is good. Damas is a nice upscale Lebanese place.
Take out is always faster than dining in at Schwartz's, but it doesn't give you the full experience. Sitting down at the counter or possibly sharing a table with some strangers is part of the eccentricity of the place. Plus, there aren't that many good places nearby to sit down and eat it - it's a 10-minute walk to Square Saint-Louis or Parc Jeanne-Mance, by which time the meat and fries will definitely be getting cold. I would suggest either going to Schwartz's and just planning to wait a bit in line, or going slightly off peak hours. An early lunch, mid-afternoon, later evening, usually little to no line (although late night can be busy with bar people looking for snacks on Thursday/Friday/Saturday nights). |
I realize the discussion has kind of wrapped for this cycle with miamiflyer8 's trip review but...
But I wanted to also give a +1 to skitraveler 's recommendation of Snowden Deli for smoked meat. Yes, as a tourist you kind of have to go to Schwartz's and I still like to go too. But my (new) manager took me to Snowden when I was in town and I now prefer their smoked meat sandwiches. Sure it's out of the core but I took the metro back to downtown and it was pretty simple and not too long of a trip. I also wanted to recommend Ma Poule Mouillée for poutine even though it's a Portuguese grilled chillen place. It's my favourite casual poutine place and only a block away from La Banquise. |

Note spelling. I was born in Montreal when my parents were living in the Snowdon neighbourhood. |
I still prefer the actual smoked meat sandwich at Schwartz's but the fries at Snowdon Deli are excellent. You can't go wrong with either but I would imagine for first time visitors, Snowdon Deli is not worth the trek since there's not a ton out near there unless you combine it with a visit to St. Joseph's Oratory.

Drinks at Atwater Cocktail Club are good, and befits the WB50 hype-vine, but missing a sense of place, wouldn't know one's in Montreal. Gonna try Clockroom tomorrow. But for now where to go for Poutine in the Golden Mile Sq area? Notre Boeuf du Grace looks good...

Just found this thread. I go to Au Pied de Cochon every time I visit Montreal. At the end of each meal, I swear I would never return - not because of the delicious cuisine, but because I am so stuffed! Always reserve for 5:00 p.m. opening time or you won't be able to sleep.
I also highly recommend Europea, which has just earned its first Michelin star. Multiple courses, but the portions are small and manageable. |
