YYZ T1 baggage carts

I notice this week that all baggage carts at T1 are free on both the departure and arrivals side. For those who check lots of bags you can now save $2 when you depart or arrive at the terminal. A potential saving of $4 if one cart is used each way. The free carts are sponsored by CIBC.

Good to know. Carts at other airports (e.g. YVR, last time I remember) don't charge but I don't recall if they have sponsorship/ads. I rarely use them. Could this be a trend in new revenue stream, such as ads on the luggage carousel?

Hallelujah!
Toronto finally emerges from 4th world to 1st world on this issue.

I have been so embarrassed over this issue for so many years when trying to
explain to arriving foreigners why they had to pay for carts.

Now you can focus on your embarrassment about the hike to the rental cars, the insane road ramps in and out of the Toronto Mahal and - everyone's favourite - Rob Ford!:p

I'm sure the porters hanging around in the arrivals are area are loving this concept.

Agreed, having to fork over money for a cart is a pain, but YYZ is still comparably cheap to the $4 or $5 US you can pay in some places.

I've also noticed that there seem to be a lack of baggage carts now that they're free. Int'l arrivals on Jul 8th was devoid of them in the afternoon - I suppose they don't have as much incentive to return them now... or the porters are hiding them ;)

I came back July 1st and it was free also in T1 Arrival, sponsored by CIBC

About time...and I'm shocked it wasn't sponsored by AMEX instead (which sponsors the "FREE" wi-fi)

long overdue! originally being from BC I was surprised to see YYZ charging for the carts when YVR has had them free for as long as I can remember. it may only be a couple of dollars, but its the principle that the airport authourity (or whomever is collecting) shouldn't resort to 'nickel and diming' people over basic conveniences...its bad enough that the prices for everything else in the airport are inflated!

Years ago, you could get a quarter for every cart returned. There was NEVER a shortage of carts. The machines dispensing two-bits are still in place!

Makes you wonder what the $25 you already paid the airport on your ticket was for...

JUst picked up my dad at T3 last night and the carts were free there as well. Makes things a bit easier. The worst is airports like LGA which charge you $5 for the cart but you are literally using them to go a couple of hundred feet! At least in YYZ you are getting some "mileage" out of the carts :)
