Toronto Pearson
Hey,
So this is my first flight leaving Pearson and going to the US on United Airlines and I leave at 6:15, so how long before the flight leaves should I be there (what time)? I am going to Cleveland, Ohio and then I have a 1hour and 5minute lay-over, so Do I need to go through security there again or anything? If any one could answer that would be great! Also, Do you know what they serve to eat/drink on a 1hour and 30minute United Airlines Flight at 6am?? |

You clear US immigration and customs in Toronto so you'll probably want to be there before 5am. Usually there is not a huge line that early, but depending on the day (Mondays get bad due to business travelers) you'll want to plan to reach at least 90 minutes before your flight.
Good news is that you won't have to clear security again in Chicago. No food on that flight unless you're in business (and even that is unlikely). Your reservation will tell you it's snacks for purchase or beverage service. Recommend hitting Tim Hortons if you're hungry. |
+1 on getting there early. 6.15am should see minimal rush but you don't want to risk it. When the line is long it is VERY long. I'd get there by 4.45am at the latest. You'll probably get there and breeze through. But this way you're safe. Grab a Timmy's (Tim Hortons) once through security and relax...better than being stressed by waiting in the immigration line and maybe missing your flight.

Is US Customs even open before 5am?

I think they start immigration at 5 but the queue starts earlier.

I have Nexus, Priority CATSA security and I never get to YYZ less than 90 minutes before my morning flight to US; more time if it is Monday or Friday.
As a Canadian you know Tim is everywher. Many love a last cup of Canadian style coffee before travelling. :D US CBP is open before 5am. I have seen them processing travelers before 5. |
The problem isn't security, it's immigration. If you reach security on a tight timeline the airlines start expediting pax through the entire line, which is really enraging if your not one of these innumerable morons who constantly arrive at the airport with only 90 minutes with checked bags and without nexus. I always budget 2 hours, and with nexus I'd cut maybe 15 minutes off that.
