Newfoundland suggestions?
A friend and I are considering visiting Newfoundland for a long weekend in the fall. What are your "must sees/dos" for this province? Thanks.

pick a coast
NF is a very large province. You can drive it (coast-to-coast!) in a full day but you won't see much on the Trans Canada (except moose!). I suggest you focus on either the east (St. John's-YYT) or the west (Deer Lake-YDF) coasts. You will want to rent a car to tour:
-West - Gros Morne, hiking, fiords; -East - Terra Nova, outports on the Burin or Avalon Peninsulas. Each has its +/- so the choice depends on personal preferences. Finally, an "out there" suggestion. Fly into YYT, drive to Fortune on the Burin, and take the ferry to St. Pierre & Miquelon, France! Experience of a lifetime! |

http://www.gonomad.com/1448-french-m...cute-peninsula Very scenic. Very French. Can be very cold (we ran into snow in April)! Robyn |
If you're talking just 3-4 days, you won't be able to see too much of the province. The island is really quite large.
I'd say a couple of days in St. John's are really a must. Do a hike on Signal Hill, go out to some of the bars on George St. or Water St. to check out some music and talk to the locals, perhaps check out Quidi Vidi and the brewery. It's a nice town, and people are very friendly - although be warned, if you're not into heavy drinking, you might find the nightlife a bit intense. You can also visit some scenic outports (small fishing towns) a relatively close drive away from St. John's. Trinity is the most famous one, but you could also hit up some other places as well if you rented a car. The Burin is also nice - I spent a few days a couple of years ago in a beautiful B&B in Grand Bank - but it's a long drive from St. John's and probably not worth it unless you've got 5-7 days. |
And these posts remind me why I like FT so much! Thank you VERY much. You have definitely made me rethink the timing (extending from the original weekend plan)! These are great suggestions; much appreciate the help.

STRONGLY recommend: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractio..._Labrador.html
Oh, and while you're on the way there (it's only a 3 hr drive from St. John's), be sure to stop in the town of Dildo for an obligatory photo of yourself in front of one of the town's signs. :D https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.n...72749279_n.jpg |
I liked St. Pierre et Miquelon a lot. Bring your passport.
