Montreal Transporation?

We will be arriving in Montreal via train and have reservations at the St. James Hotel in Old Montreal.

Can anyone let me know about how much we should expect to pay for taxi fare from the train station to the hotel?

Any suggestions or warnings (type of cab, etc.)?

Thank you in advance!

From the train station to your hotel is only about a 10 minute walk, but with luggage you'll probably want to take a taxi. There is a regulated taxi stand at the central train station. It should only be somewhere between 6 and 8 dollars fare to the hotel depending on the traffic, not including tip.

Montreal has a reasonably well regulated cab system with metered cabs and I've never had an issue and I don't think I've even ever seen a gypsy cab.

The only issue you may have is getting a new driver who doesn't know the smaller hotels by name so make sure you have the street address for the hotel written down just in case.

While you're in Montréal, take their Métro to get around. http://www.stm.info/english/metro/a-index.htm

St-James is well known, shouldn't be a problem. Enjoy your stay!

According to the July/August in-flight mag on Porter, a taxi from YUL to downtown costs $40!

As others have stated, there are # more economical options.

Pardonnez-moi, ce qui train arrive à YUL

Montreal Central Station to St James should be less than $10. Just have the name of the hotel and the address written out for the driver and you should be fine.

I borrow this thread for an info.

I'll be visiting Montreal on a long weekend in November.

I've enjoy cycling in a previous tour in Vancouver, and would like to step on bike again.

I've got reading on "Bixi" site they will dismantle the renting stations around mid November, for the winter season.

In your opinion, is cycling a doable (if not "warm") option in early nov.?
Would you suggest other and better rental options than "Bixi".

Not sure how relaxing is the 30 min. rule, for those looking for a full day around the city and its surrounds.

Cheers for your opinions.

You may want to start this as a separate thread as it risks getting burried.

To answer your question regarding weather: who knows?!

There is certainly the risk of snow during that period in time. In fact, I believe it snowed last night. It could just as easily be warm and into the mid to upper 10C . . . maybe near 20C (with a heat wave). On the weather aspect I think you'll have to play it by ear closer to the date.

Just make sure you don't offend the ticket person by speaking English!

Another FT thread I exhumed pointed rightly that Bixi service is more oriented to point to point renting, rather than calm tourist use.

I think it's a great service to citizens, and AFAIK replied in many European cities.

In my case probably would work fine a classic daily rent.

CanadianConnection33, snowing in October? Mmm, quite exciting..:D

Thanks for the infos, if you spot someone riding dressed in Santa Claus style, it's me!

Slightly OT, but just got the envelope I've requested at Tourisme Montréal with a brochure and the city map.

Aftel only 6 working days.

Kudos to the staff!
