FLy America from Canada to other country (yes I know it's not strictly AP)

I've asked this in another forum but would like to see if any canadians have experience this. I'm flying from Vancouver to Afghanistan but under a US contract. I realize that if I flew out of US that would be one thing and I would have to comply, but wonder how this works if flying out of Canada and avoiding US.

Yes, I suppose I could fly through the US at often more expense and greater time, more stops etc. and there are exemptions to the rule, but for the life of me, I cannot figure when they kick in.

IF someone could help me who has had experience with this I would appreciate it.

thanks,

Lorna

Europe (AC/LH/BA/AA)? Dubai (EK)? Doha (Qatar)? Asia (China, Japan, Korea)?
