transit without visa through YYZ?

Hi all,

I am a Thai passport holder and currently holding a U.S. F-1 (student) visa studying in the U.S.A. and am thinking of visiting Argentina some time in the near future. The cheapest *A option for me is to take AC's ORD-YYZ-SCL-EZE routing. However, I am not quite certain if this means that I will have to obtain a Canadian transit visa to get through YYZ as if I would need to use to transit in this manner through any U.S. airports. Does anyone have any further information about this? I will be very grateful.

Regards,
Tisorn

You will see a Canadian Immigration officer when transiting YYZ. YYZ doesn't do sterile transit so you will need to have appropriate doc to enter Canada.

Not correct.
TWOV has been offered on AC via YYZ and YVR since April.
Make sure you're checked through to your final destination and the connection at YYZ must be on the same calendar date.

The links you provide do not address the OP's situation.

tisorn,

You will need a visa to enter or transit Canada - see http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/visas.asp

There is no sterile international transit area like those at BKK or HKG. Upon your arrival in YYZ, you will proceed to Customs B. A CBSA officer will verify your documents and admissibility to Canada. Once you are finished with the formalities, you will proceed to the international pier of Terminal 1 to wait for your flight to SCL/EZE.

Echo the poster above. There is TWOV at YYZ but OP's situation doesn't apply.

I echo the above posters. TWOV only applies between international destinations and the USA - thus you will need a visa.

Jebby_ca - I believe the Customs A and B signage are now gone. OP - Just follow the international connections sign (connection is on the left just before the escalators down to Canada Customs entry into Canada).

Presume you are in or near Chicago. Suggest you contact the Canadian consulate for the ungarbled.

Not correct. TWOV Canada is available to or from the US via YVR and YYZ. OP question has to do with requirements for Thai passport holder wishing to transit Canada on way from US to international destination on same day.

Based on the Air Canada link provided above, I'm inclined to agree with californiadreamin' that a Visa will not be required (bolding mine).

In accordance with the Canadian government’s Transit without Visa (TWOV) program, citizens of certain Asian countries who are transiting through Vancouver International or Toronto Pearson International airports to or from the US are not required to obtain a Canadian temporary resident visa, provided:

•They are travelling to Canada on an Air Canada or Air Canada Express (operated by Jazz only) flight,
•They hold a valid passport from their country,
•They hold a US visa that is valid upon their arrival in the US.
The TWOV program applies to the following passengers only:

•Citizens from Indonesia, the Philippines, Taiwan (Chinese Taipei) and Thailand
•Citizens of China who are travelling from Beijing, Hong Kong or Shanghai.
From what I can tell...
  • Thai citizens are eligible for the program.
  • Flights from the US are eligible. Not only does the AC website specifically state this, but why else would they state that Air Canada Express flights qualify? AFAIK Jazz doesn't fly to Asia.
  • There is nothing stating that citizens from Indonesia, the Phillipines, Taiwan and Thailand have to be travelling to/from those countries.

Of course, I would recommend that the OP check with a Canadian consulate to confirm the above.

The citizenship and immigration Canada website linked to only refers to what airports and airlines need to do in order to be eligible to qualify for the program and doesn't really affect the OP as he will be transiting an airport and using an airline that do qualify.

I took a read through it too and I would tend to come to the same conclusion as YEG USER. You might want to check with a CBSA border officer though at www.cbsa.gc.ca look under contacts and there is a 1-800 number that will connect you to a border services officer, who may or may not be helpful (but if hte answer is not, phone again, someone will hopefully give you a firm answer)
