Record drought with wildfires followed by near record rain year are a BAD combination. :( It took 16 years, tons of dynamite, convict labor and a number of deaths to build 100 miles of road which is essentially a tourist attraction. I'm wondering how much effort/time/money will be put into rebuilding it before questions are asked about the long term safety of having a road hugging the cliffside: should they even try to replicate the road, or move it inland for safety? Caltrans sets new target date to reopen Highway 1 in Big Sur at Mud Creek The new roadway will be supported with a series of embankments, berms, rocks, netting, culverts and other stabilizing materials. Caltrans announced it will continuously evaluate the opening date as work progresses and should provide an update sometime in July.
