Record drought with wildfires followed by near record rain year are a BAD combination. :(

From the beginning I thought the 6 month estimates to get Hwy 1 re-opened were ridiculously optimistic, and the slide confirms my suspicions. The issue was never just one bridge, that whole coastline is unstable (geologically, people, we're not straying into OMNI/PR here) between the fault lines, drought, excessive rain/flooding and wildfires that exacerbate the landslides by killing the vegetation that helps stabilize the soil.

It took 16 years, tons of dynamite, convict labor and a number of deaths to build 100 miles of road which is essentially a tourist attraction. I'm wondering how much effort/time/money will be put into rebuilding it before questions are asked about the long term safety of having a road hugging the cliffside: should they even try to replicate the road, or move it inland for safety?

UPDATE 5/27: just heard on the radio that CalTrans estimates it will be at least a full year before the slide is cleared, then they will have to evaluate and repair the road.

Highway 1 will be rebuilt on top of the Mud Creek Slide.
Big Sur abuzz with activity as Caltrans gets busy rebuilding Hwy. 1

Excerpts:

***

Caltrans announced this week it would construct the new road over the slide — which it called the biggest in the highway’s history — instead of around or through it, saying it was the quickest, least expensive option.

***

Big questions about the project, such as the ultimate cost and a target date for completion, haven’t been answered yet. Erwin said an earlier estimate that the highway would be closed at least a year hasn’t changed.

***

The new road won’t follow the course of the old highway exactly but “will be a little bit to the west, on land that didn’t exist before,” Erwin said. Silva said the new road will probably be “a couple hundred feet” from the old highway, parts of which are buried under the slide, while other sections came crashing down the mountain along with other debris.

Thanks for the update, boxo.

Exactly how far south can I drive from Carmel? Can I drive as far south as Rocky Point Restaurant? What about Nepenthe?

Los Angeles Times:
Record landslide that buried Highway 1 near Big Sur won't be fixed until late summer of 2018

Fixing the biggest debris slide in the state’s history, which closed the road to all traffic for almost four months, will take at least until late summer of 2018 and cost $40 million, Caltrans said in a statement Monday.

Caltrans gave these additional updates for Highway 1 closures in the Big Sur area:

--New girders have been lowered into place for the replacement of the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge, which buckled and was later demolished in March. It is expected to be completed in mid-October.

--A closure at Paul’s Slide, about 12 miles north of the Mud Creek slide, reopened to one-way reversing traffic on July 17.

Now open. You still can't do the full coastal drive between San Simeon and Big Sur, but you can go quite a bit south from Big Sur.

Caltrans sets new target date to reopen Highway 1 in Big Sur at Mud Creek

The new roadway will be supported with a series of embankments, berms, rocks, netting, culverts and other stabilizing materials. Caltrans announced it will continuously evaluate the opening date as work progresses and should provide an update sometime in July. Caltrans also expects to evaluate Highway 1 after it’s reopened along with occasional lane closures and continuous roadwork.

Re-opening date moved up

Big Sur’s southern route to open in late July

The entire coastal stretch of California’s iconic Highway 1 will re-open at the end of July, restoring a beloved but fragile route from San Francisco to Los Angeles that has been closed for more than a year, Caltrans announced on Tuesday morning.

So the target date for completion, previously set for mid-September, has been moved forward.
