Yes, Laguan started a free shuttle this year. It's pretty awesome.

I'd recommend skipping San Diego (nice place but dull unless Navy things are of interest) doing the standard tourist things in LA (Guggenheim, Disneyland etc.), then heading straight up Highway 1. Spend your beach days in Carmel, which is a charming and very walkable town. A side trip to Monterey and its Aquarium will add some extra interest. Then on up to SF and Sonoma.

IMHO, Santa Barbara and Laguna Beach are the two most interesting/enjoyable beach towns in S Calif, in addition to the beach itself.

I think I may split it between the two, Santa Barbara and Laguna beach.

We'll probably pick a property rental as there seems to be a large selection, which can be daunting.

Santa Barbara is one of my favorite places in the world.

For what it's worth, I'd get a car even while in the San Diego and LA area, otherwise you cut your realistic options down dramatically. Consider new rental while in LA, which should be cheap, and another for the one way drive to SF.

I'd choose somewhere on the California central coast: Morro Bay, Pismo, Avila, or Cayucos.

The central coast feels the most Californian to me. Anything south of Santa Barbara feels SoCal.

Once you get your itinerary firmed up, we may be able to give specific
suggestions re: restaurants, beaches etc.

If you go to Pismo Beach try the Cracked Crab. It's my 1x/year treat for
King Crab. http://www.crackedcrab.com
The Central Coast has fantastic wineries that rival Napa (IMO) without all
the insanity. Turley, Letitia, Edna Valley, etc.

Or if you find yourself in Laguna Beach, Papa's Taco's has drool-worthy fish taco's.
The Main Beach is great for people watching, sometimes pro-basketball players will be on the courts. A few miles north is a quieter beach - great for long walks - Crystal Cove.

And then there's Tomales Bay for Oysters & Petaluma for Goat Cheese - etc.

That's just off the top of my head.
