I've always been curious how their business model works. I assume that they only offer a certain number of seats on each trip for $1.

YQ is $74.68 on LA-SFO.

:D

I saw this blowing up on Facebook but couldn't believe it. $1 from San Jose to LA is just crazy cheap.

It's the usual EU low-cost yield management scenario. Seats are released for sale 1-2 months in advance. When they were last in CA, they averaged a couple $1 seats per bus, a few more released at about $3, and price buckets increased with the the number of tickets sold and how close it was to the day of travel. Last-minute tickets (24 hour cutoff due to Internet/telephone only CC sales) typically averaged 5-10% less than the equivalent Greyhound ticket...and since their buses were clean, comfortable, had WiFi, and weren't full of scary/crazy/drugged/criminal/dirty people...they were a distinct cut above.

Are the tickets transferable or do they have to be used by the purchaser?

Transferring incurs the change fee.

For the LA-Bay Area run I played with the booking engine and there are actually about 20 $1 seats on the weekdays, then about 10 $3 seats. The jump to the next fare bucket of $25, $30, or $35 is abrupt. There are no fares charged above $35.

Those of us who fly a lot will understand how Megabus works - they use Revenue management, so as the lower fare buckets get used up the price increases.

Their routes now extend to Sacramento and Reno, NV.

NEW YORK, NY (November 28, 2012) – Megabus.com, the first city-to-city, express bus company with fares from $1, today announced expansion to California and Nevada. California and Nevada residents can now travel express to/from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oakland, Calif., Riverside, Calif., Las Vegas, Sparks/Reno, Nev., Sacramento, Calif., and San Jose, Calif. for as low as $1. Frequent daily service will begin Dec. 12, and customers can begin booking travel at www.megabus.com today.
Fares start as low as $1 every day and increase gradually as the traveling date gets closer. Customers are encouraged to book early to secure $1 fares.
