car or bus in San Diego?

What is the most convenient for getting around San Diego with least amount of hassle? IE: if parking is a premium then that could be a hassle to rent a car...

It depends on where you are going but this is really a car city. Daily bus passes are only $5 but allot of the routes aren't the most convenient. Unless where you were going from/to is specifically convenient on a bus or trolly, I'd opt for the car.

Where are you staying and what do you want to see?

Most likely you should rent a car. The trolley and bus are decent but you will waste a lot of time waiting for them and the trolley doesn't go nearly enough places and the buses aren't the most fun to go on. Parking is pretty good everywhere, downtown can be tough at times but just go around a few blocks and you can find a spot (or park in horton plaza if your going to be downtown for less then 3 hours, you validate your own parking in the mall).

Depends when you are going and where you are staying and what you want to do.

If you are going to San Diego next week, unless you are going for the HUGE convention that is in town, cancel your trip and go another time. Hotels are at a premium if you can find one, car rates are higher and parking will be non-existent. All downtown lots have sold tickets to park in them and they are sold out. So no downtown parking next week.....

Otherwise, I always get a car to get around, unless you are just doing things downtown, San Diego is pretty spread out. A car would be easier.

I agree. You need to supply more info, including where you will stay, what you want to see, how much time you will have total, whether the cost of car rental and parking is a problem for you, etc. I utilized trollery (light rail) and busses to get around while we were staying in the convention area, since parking fees at our hotel were $25-30 per night. To places downtown, and even Balboa Park, it was fairly easy (I walked to the USS Midway). To the Scripps Aquarium in La Jolla, a bit of a pain. If I had wanted to go to the Wild Animal Park, it would have been impossible without a car, UNLESS I took a tour (which is another option). Of course, if you're staying in, say, Hotel Circle or La Jolla, you pretty much need a car (and parking at your hotel may well be free).
